Well-balanced, realistic, and inclusive

I used this book in North American, North African, and South Asian cultures, and found it very useful. Examples from various cultures, case studies, ethical dilemmas, and easy to understand language helped my students understand the OD process. Also, whenever I read about Gary's expereinces in cross-cultural settings, I end up reflecting on my own experiences, which helps me learn a lot. The text of this book also helps me challenge my students' beliefs, stereotypes, assumptions, and cultural values. THANKS!

IMPRESSIVE IN SCOPE AND DEPTH-A FIRST-RATE TEXT.

This book is developed around an Organization Development Process (ODP) Model and is based on the action research model-the organizing approach for doing OD. The ODP model consists of seven phases:
- entry,
- start-up,
- assessment and feedback,
- action planning,
- implementation (intervention),
- evaluation,
- adoption, and
- separation.

The book devotes six chapters to implementation (intervention). These center on the following levels:
- individual,
- team and inter-team,
- process,
- global,
- organizational, and
- community and national.

The organization of material is rigorous and clear. There is a liberal use of figures and tables. The writing is highly accessible. Emphasis is placed on practical applications.

The book includes a glossary and references. This book is impressive in scope and depth, and reflects the distinguished background of McLean.

This is a first-rate text that offers an excellent process-oriented introduction to OD. Highly recommended.

A straightforward book for organizational development professionals

This simple book introduces the profession of organization development. It is written so clearly that a relative novice could probably read it and set up shop as an organizational development consultant (or at least know how to hire a good one). Gary N. McLean explains everything and does not unnecessarily complicate straightforward steps. In fact, some steps may be more complex than he makes them seem - although he does caution companies that organizational development may require outside expertise. getAbstract finds that his book will be most useful to those considering working in organizational-development consulting, or to managers who are new to the field.

Bridging the gap between heavy theory and heavy practice, "Organization Development provides an emphasis on performance and results in addition to an overview of tools, techniques, and processes. Covering basic steps such as marketing, start-up, planning, and evaluation, the book includes a comprehensive discussion of implementation from the individual level to the global. The book gives consultants, managers, and students of the field a holistic perspective into the full range of values that organization development has to offer.
