What Dreams May Come

Mr. Edwards' portrayal of the day-to-day trials and tribulations embodied within the individual Orca is
up close and personal without being solipsistic. Because, as I got more and more into the lives of Darius and Fila, I could feel myself actually being in their environment. Not imagining it.
I think of the folktales of Merce Rodoreda and Isak Dinsen, most particularly one called The Diver which has the protagonist finding his way to the fish in the sea with this fortuitous ending: "Man, in the end, is alarmed by the idea of time and unbalanced by wanderings between past and future. The inhabitants of a liquid world have brought past and future together in the maxim: Apres nous le déluge"
I'm fond of the folktales of Mercé Rodoreda and Isak Dinsen, but unlike in their stories where the narrator sometimes evolves into another life form, in Mr. Edwards' story, the protagonist, Darius, is the life form. He doesn't have to evolve into anything, he already is and could well be any one of us: fighting for our family, raising our children, living in a society, and, like any one of us, loving our family. With all the structure and tenderness and all the dreams we've ever dreamt. Yes, it is a story for grown-ups. But with the author's delightful pictures and a story line as exciting and dramatic as Free Willy, even children will enjoy having this tale of the hero, Darius, and his loving Fila read to them over and over again.

A richly illustrated story, A Tail of Two Orca allows you, the reader to travel into the depths of a realm rarely experienced by man or woman. Join Darius and Fila, killer whales and lovers for life on a journey into a world not a great deal unlike our own. It is a tale of one family?s devotion, love, heroism, and betrayal. A Tail of Two Orca is a love story in the most classic sense. A story that will captivate you from the opening paragraph and leave you believing we are not the only civilized, intelligent beings on this planet capable of equally wondrous and horrific behavior. Mr. Edwards? imaginative portrayal of the day-to-day trials and tribulations embodied within the pod as well as each individual orca will give readers a newfound appreciation for the thoughts and emotions that must exist, at some level, within all living things.
