Fascinating Saga

It's amazing to realize that a woman, by herself, can bike around the world. This account of her experiences is fascinating and one can only imagine the courage it took to make this trip. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a dream and seeks the inspiration to realize it.

A courageous expedition across cultures

This is the story of a woman's bicycle trip around the world, which in itself would be an accomplishment, but Pam did it when she was nearly 60, and she did it alone. With her limited belongings stuffed into four panniers, she traveled east across Europe, then southerly through Turkey toward Pakistan, China and Hong Kong. In North America she rode from Mexico City to Texas, through the deep South to Atlanta, and finished in Charlotte, NC. Impressively, this story is more about the people she met en route than it is about herself, although she comments wryly on all that transpires with characteristic British humor. Her experience with Chinese male eating habits, for example, is hilarious. I was greatly impressed at how many complete strangers went out of their way to help her - providing food, shelter and guidance - out of respect for what she was doing. The mere request to pitch her tent in people's back yards brought a range of responses, many admirable, but also a few squirmy apologies from duplicitous religious practitioners. This glimpse into the soul of humanity offers many lessons about what we as a global society are capable of - both mind-numbing pettiness, as well as tremendous generosity and courage.
