a major work

This book is another translation of Jakob von Gunten. In Institute Benjamenta, young men learn to be perfect zeros. In this pre-kafkaien, labyrinthine and absurd world, Jakob is a true forerunner of Joseph K. But he may also be Robert Walser's own brother : a servant convinced of his inferiority, an anti-hero. Walser wrote only a few novels for he feared not to be up to it... and he was wrong. In 1995, the Quay Brothers directed a wonderful film based on this book and consecrated it as a major novel.
