Something For the Imagination

Ominous chimes told listeners each week that they were about to be entertained and thrilled. Radio ruled the airwaves for decades and "Suspense" was one of the finest and most popular shows ever produced.

"Suspense" was truly the cream of the crop. There were well written stories given a glossy and realistic production that week after week kept listeners glued to their chairs, bent slightly forward so as not to miss even one moment of the twist ending or haunting finale. Great stars from the era were always happy to appear, as this particular collection shows.

These eight gems will have you using your imagination as no television show or feature film can. Radio was a theatre of the imagination, and these eight gems will stretch the mind into shadowed corners and crimes with a twist. Each of these shows ranging in time from 1942-1949 have terrific guest stars and tense and involving stories of suspense.

Though I might argue that The House on Cypress Canyon, A Thing of Beauty, and A Summer Night, are equally as good, it is hard to argue with radio fans who voted The Hitchhiker, starring Orson Welles the best Suspense show ever aired. It is included here with some great company.

This collection includes: "The Hitchhiker" -- (9/2/42) with Orson Welles -- "No More Alice" -- (3/14/46) with Paul Henreid -- "You Can't Die Twice" -- (3/31/49) with Edward G. Robinson -- "Green-Eyed Monster" -- (4/17/47) with Lloyd Nolan -- "Momentum" -- (10/27/49) with Victor Mature -- "Last Confession" -- (9/15/49) with Dorothy McGuire -- "Crimes Without Passion" -- (5/2/46) with Joseph Cotten -- "Mr. Markham, Antique Dealer" (5/11/43) with Paul Lukas

This is an excellent introduction to old radio, and especially "Suspense." Those curious about this now nearly forgotten medium which once ruled the nation can discover why with this sterling collection of stories guaranteed to keep you in, Suspense!
