Using contemptorary photographs, illustrations, and facsimile reproductions, it offers selected highlights from Whittier's life. Unlike Samuel Pickard's earlier and still valuable WHITTIERLAND, A HANDBOOK OF NORTH ESSEX, this book offers pictures instead of commentary and broadens the scope to include all aspects of his life as editor, publisher, abolitionist, and poet rather than just local Essex country associations.
