Harsh novel...

I enjoyed this book, but at the same time felt my anger rising as I read it. It details the laws that were unjustly passed in "the land of the free" to ensure that the government and ONLY the government would have access to many weapons that had previously been legal for most citizens to own.
The character of Henry Bowman is used to show how *the gun culture* is populated by those that enjoy shooting, not just for hunting, but for sports such as skeet and target.
One thing I do NOT enjoy about this book (and it seems to be a failing of many a *gun culture* book) is the amount of financial resources the characters amass or inherit. What about the guy or gal that can't afford 34 weapons and 40,000 rounds of ammo in a retreat in the hills? What about the homeowner that has one or two weapons and wants to continue to have the right to defend their lives and property?
Characters in these books are writ large it seems, because the authors think only men read them. All the female characters have huge chests, silken hair and legs that go on forever...the men are all in top physical shape and have worked at such adventurous jobs as big game hunters and the like...
Give me some reality, PLEASE.
Give me a character that smokes a little too much or has a pot belly or a woman that is chubby with a houseful of kids clamoring for her attention.

That being said, I would still recommend this book. It will shatter any liberal misconceptions one might have about the government being there to help and anger most because it shows the machinations of government agencies gone power-mad and besotted with their own inflated self importance.

Needs an Editor? If you live in reality, read this Book!

I have had a first edition copy of this book for many years and it is without a doubt my favorite book. I have recently read some of the negative reviews of this book and I can come to only one conclusion: The people who wrote these were people who have either never owned a firearm and dealt with the licensing procedures, or have never had a negative experience with the Government of any type. As harsh as this book may seem, this book describes the ugly truth about reality. It can be dishonest, it can be ugly, and it can be very violent. This book describes the truth about Society past and present.
While Mr. Ross has an oustanding knowledge of firearms, what really makes this book a joy to read is the history of past events he injects into the fiction life of the main character. All are spot on!
I have met some of the people Mr. Ross consulted during his writting of this book and can honestly say that very little of this book is outside of current day reality. If you think it is then please educate yourself about past history, legal decisions, and the technical aspects of firearms he describes in this book.

A Valuable Resource - an extraordinary story

It's all been covered in the other 300+ reviews. I just wanted to pile on the enthusiastic praise. This work is the single best historical (even though threaded into a fictional story) account of the firearms laws in the United States. Don't read it to the kids because it's not gentle or nice.

One heck of a story.

Own Guns read this Book.

If you own guns. You NEED to read this book and join the NRA.
They are not affiliated with eachother.
If you dont own guns. You NEED to read this book. Esecially if you are a freedom loving American. And think things could and should be better.
Read it if you want a good fiction novel, chock full of true historical events. And a quality story created from our past.
John Ross has written a masterpiece, and put his life on the line in doing so.
You Cannot Find This is Bookstores.
Happy reading...
