EXACTING and AUTHENTIC DETAIL

A really engaging account of young men unwittingly involved in a war we should never have been engaged in, in a country so far away we had no way of knowing the sacrifices demanded of our youth in combat, and the looming prospect of being dragged down the same rat-hole again. The details are astonishing and so true that it brings back the very flavor, even the smells of everyday life in the Mekong Delta as I remember from my time there.
A must-read for anyone with a thirst for why we continue to impose our will on civilizations so far removed from our shores.

A Book U Can't Put Down

"Those of us who were not draft-age males when the draft lottery went into effect can only imagine what would have gone through our minds as we waited for our birth dates to be drawn. The opening scene of "The Red Caduceus" shows us four young men gathered together on that evening, and we find out enough about each one to make us care about their fates. From that point on the author has hooked us and we can't put the book down and abandon Ronnie and BJ once they find themselves to be almost certain draftees.

In the course of reading their stories we get some insight into the decisions made by the young men of that era and also of the consequences of those decisions. Ronnie chooses to join the Navy and become a medical corpsman, a path that requires bravery most of us will never be called upon to show. The story is primarily his. He wears the caduceus of the title and we come to admire him as he chooses to go in harm's way to save the lives with which he is entrusted.

I recommend this book to anyone who finds the Vietnam War fascinating and to anyone who is in awe of those who are braver than we."

Excellent Book!

Dear Jerry,
I'm sorry for not having gotten back with you in such a long while, but I've been busy working on another painting. I just finished it (the painting)today and thought I'd take the time to finally get back with you. I received your book and can't tell you how much it meant to me. I read the book (always after painting!) and ended up flying through it in two nights. I must admit that it brought tears to my eyes in several parts. You did a great job, my friend, and find myself waiting now for your next venture! I also found that my current painting, entitled, "Faces," was indeed influenced a great deal by your book. I don't have a photo of it yet, but as soon as I do, I'll send you a copy. Thanks again, bro!

The Red Caduceus Hits The Mark

As a retired Navy helicopter Search and Rescue crew chief, I found "The Red Caduceus" to be very interesting and exciting. I felt like I was right there ... it captured my mind. I recommend "The Red Caduceus" to any veteran, especially to those who've served overseas in harm's way. I feel that "The Red Caduceus" stimulates the common bond we all share bewteen ourselves, our loved ones and our friends.

The Red Caduceus

The strong part of the novel takes place in Viet Nam. The descriptions of the war, people's attitudes, the geography, the paradoxes, etc. are authentic and brought back memories. According to the introduction, it was written as a tribute to medics and certainly accomplished that goal.
