Are laws being changed such that America is heading towards fascism?

I really enjoyed this quick read (150 pages). It reminds the reader how fragile democracy is, and shows the slippery slope we are on towards losing our freedoms in America. 4 stars instead of 5 because: the editor did a poor job of catching all spelling/grammatical errors, and because I thought some of the parallels were a little overblown. Still, a great read though, and one that I would definitely recommend.

Don't Worry, Be Happy!

Open your mind to the potential harm any president or elected official can do. Our second president a founding father, John Adam, a harbinger of freedom, gave us the Alien and Sedition Act. He used the act to imprison anyone who spoke out against him or the government. Did you think they had waterboarding back then? If you are going to take Naomi's book seriously, follow along with the source material: Declaration Of Independence, Constitution Of The United States Of America, Bill Of Rights And Constitutional Amendments (Including Images Of Original Historical American Documents) This book follows the path that one must know the past in order to understand the present day artificial culture of fear. Wake up! Call a commentator and tell the fear mongers that enough is enough.

An important and timely book

* Naomi Wolf has written a profoundly disturbing book, subtitled a "letter of warning to a young patriot." Focusing primarily on events of the current Bush administration, she discusses ten steps that dictatorships take to limit personal, political and corporate freedom, steps that she says, clearly and with unimpeachable evidence, that the current Bush administration have taken since its inception, and especially since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. These steps are as follows: Invoke an external and internal threat, establish secret prisons, develop a paramilitary force, surveil citizens' groups, arbitrarily detain and release citizens, target key individuals, restrict the press, cast criticism as `espionage' and dissent as `treason', and subvert the rule of law. The Bush administration has done each of these things, in secret and openly and blatantly, justifying its actions, denouncing whoever objects to them, ignoring claims that they are breaking the laws of the land, and claiming powers and privileges of the office of president that shock and dismay those who value freedom and democracy. In eight short years, George W. Bush and his cronies have turned America into a giant Third World country in which the infrastructure is rotting, and monies for needed social and health programs has been diverted into military adventures that have damaged America's reputation and nearly bankrupted Her. In support of its aims, Bush message has been a persistent fog of fear: Follow us and we will safe and protect you from the "evildoers," who are "every-where," and don't listen to the nay sayers, who are "tools of the enemy," if not the enemy itself.

To me, this all harkens back to the dark days of Joe McCarthy and the witch hunts of the 1950s and 60s, with one notable difference: These people not only have greed and power, they have learned how to use and wield it in subtle and blatant ways. Wolf's book, as it says in words printed at the bottom of the front cover, "a citizen's call to action." In many ways, it is a scary book, and it should be because there are scary things happening in our country that have had a whole eight years to get a foot-hold. Can and will we wake up before we find ourselves living in a large, wealthy Third World country without the freedoms that our founders held so precious? I sincerely hope not.

This book is no joke, no cheap scare pamphlet. It is well-documented, important, and well worth your time. If you haven't yet read it, pick up a copy, read it, and get involved in some way to make sure that you, your children and grandchildren have a free and prosperous place in which to live.

A Must Read For Anyone Claiming To Be An American

Excellent Book. A must read.

If I could get my children to only read three books as they become an adult, this would be one of those three.

I am so grateful for her courage to tell the truth. You are so brave Naomi. Thank you being a true Patriot to the Constitution and our beloved Country.

Pulling it all together

TEoA is a call-to-arms for everyone who claims to love America, freedom, and democracy. Thoughtful and well-presented, Wolf goes through her "ten steps" of Fascism, drawing our attention to frightening similarities between the America of George W. Bush and the common practices of past totalitarian governments.

What struck me is: I was aware of (almost) all of the abuses of American freedom the Wolf discusses but I had never considered them all together. You hear of this infringement of our rights here and that invasion of our privacy there but they pop up in a kind of isolated fashion, not really registering in the collective mind. Presented together in this kind of organized manner, however, you really begin to get a sense of how profound the dangers are.

Thank heaven for term limits. (I shudder to think what four or eight more years of G.W. Bush might do to America...)

Highly recommended.

In a stunning indictment of the Bush administration and Congress, best-selling author Naomi Wolf lays out her case for saving American democracy. In authoritative research and documentation Wolf explains how events of the last six years parallel steps taken in the early years of the 20th centuryÂ?s worst dictatorships such as Germany, Russia, China, and Chile.

The book cuts across political parties and ideologies and speaks directly to those among us who are concerned about the ever-tightening noose being placed around our liberties.

In this timely call to arms, Naomi Wolf compels us to face the way our free America is under assault. She warns usÂ?with the straight-to-fellow-citizens urgency of one of Thomas PaineÂ?s revolutionary pamphletsÂ?that we have little time to lose if our children are to live in real freedom.

Â?Recent history has profound lessons for us in the U.S. today about how fascist, totalitarian, and other repressive leaders seize and maintain power, especially in what were once democracies. The secret is that these leaders all tend to take very similar, parallel steps. The Founders of this nation were so deeply familiar with tyranny and the habits and practices of tyrants that they set up our checks and balances precisely out of fear of what is unfolding today. We are seeing these same kinds of tactics now closing down freedoms in America, turning our nation into something that in the near future could be quite other than the open society in which we grew up and learned to love liberty,Â? states Wolf.

Wolf is taking her message directly to the American people in the most accessible form and as part of a large national campaign to reach out to ordinary Americans about the dangers we face today. This includes a lecture and speaking tour, and being part of the nascent American Freedom Campaign, a grassroots efforts to ensure that presidential candidates pledge to uphold the constitution and protect our liberties from further erosion.

The End of America will shock, enrage, and motivateÂ?spurring us to act, as the Founders would have counted on us to do in a time such as this, as rebels and patriotsÂ?to save our liberty and defend our nation.
