Great book to provoke your thinking

I heartily recommend Luke Wroblewski's Web Form Design for people: especially for those who create web forms but don't have a strong background in usability and for those who hire others to create forms. The book is structured in three parts: form structure, form elements, and form interaction, and includes a plethora of real-world examples. Whether you're a novice or expert, walking through Wroblewski's overview of forms-related issues will provoke your thinking about forms design choices and their impact.

While I spend a great deal of time designing forms of various complexity, and I have a background in human-computer interaction, reading through Wroblewski's structure of the related issues helped organize my thinking.

I enjoyed the 'perspectives' offered by a variety of experts in the field, broadening the scope of the book.
All of the images from the book are available at [...]/ if you'd like more of a sense of what's inside. [...]

Now I understand

I was fully aware that a simple form can be a great barrier to website users. This book has given me great insights in how and why barriers should be removed, and forms improved. Convesion is my topic - this book is a great help...!

Good pointers to web form design but I expected more

I didn't buy this book because I wanted to learn more on web form design. I knew the insights in the book were based on actual user studies and not just subjective experience of the author alone, so I was more interested in the data behind the insights.

Unfortunately the book didn't match my expectations because I would've liked to see more findings based on testing, studies conducted by others and literature in general. What I wanted to see was a more "scientific" book and not just another web design book.

Don't get me wrong though. The book is great if you just want to learn how to design basic forms with basic HTML user interface widgets for websites. Web application interfaces are out of scope of this book.

I recommend this title for those that are relatively new to the user interface design side of web forms or need to freshen up their knowledge. I think the book could also be a good tool to back up your design decisions in the face of an opposition resisting to reconsider a bad design of a particular form.

It should also be remembered that good UI design alone does not guarantee that the form will be accessible and usable for all. A lot of work needs to be done under the hood starting from the HTML markup. If I remember right, the book Web Accessibility: Web Standards and Regulatory Compliance, has a great chapter on building the HTML right!

Web Form Design

The book arrived on time in excellent condition.
I was somewhat disappointed that there was very little coding information to get the effects described.

As design examples and explanation, it was adequate.

Forms make or break the most crucial online interactions: checkout, registration, and any task requiring information entry. In Web Form Design, Luke Wroblewski draws on original research, his considerable experience at Yahoo! and eBay, and the perspectives of many of the field's leading designers to show you everything you need to know about designing effective and engaging web forms.
