Mexico: No County For Young Ladies

To be fair to Bacalar, the city afforded the Terrell family three of their police officers for several days search in Cancun. Would any U.S. city exclusively dedicate three policemen or even one officer to a missing person family
for more time than it takes to write the report? To be fair to the Terrell family, they along with some Cancun police officers rescued two young teenage girls from the flesh trade. Hey, that's more hero work than I've done lately. Here's the problem: I couldn't help but read this book without that same look on my face that my wife had when she watched that film clip of Steve Irwin feeding a big crocodile with one hand while he was holding his baby with his other arm. There's a reason millions upon millions of Mexicans have left their country of birth to relocate in the United States (Hint: it's not just the weather nor the economy). I applaud Vanda Terrell's honesty in telling her story to skeptics like me. I understand that she wants to relate that God's love never leaves us even if we think it has. As for those of you Christian soldiers who feel the need to pull up stakes and do the Lord's work beyond the borders of mankind's last best hope, my bromide is: sally forth, but don't let the kids get off the boat.

White Butterfly

Even though I knew the story of the girl's disappearance and the outcome of the story it was spellbinding to read. The parents' faith during this terrible ordeal is admirable.

White Butterfly by Vanda Terrell

I have just fininshed reading White Butterfly by Vanda Terrell. Mrs. Terrell was my daughter's senior English teacher at Plano Senior High School, in 1998-1999. It was after seeing her on Hour of Power that I ordered the book. White Butterfly turned out to be a real page turner and difficult to put down. If you like to read real life stories and especially if you're the parent of teenagers, then White Butterfly would be a book for you. There's intrigue, drama, deceit, hopelessness, and hopefulness. Not since Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls have I been so captivated. Vanda Terrell draws you into her experiences, feelings, and trials. I believe her faith in God will be a far reaching witness for the young people she has taught.

Are your family problems insurmountable?

If you ever think that the trials in your life are too much to handle, please read White Butterfly. I know Vanda's parents and shared their pain and fear from the beginning. I read this book, knowing the outcome, and still couldn't put it down. It is a must-read for anyone facing seemingly impossible family problems. This is a painful and harrowing tale, but one is left in awe of Vanda's capacity for forgiveness and humbled by the depth of her faith.

Unwavering love propels these parents onward. When Vanda Terrell and her husband, Mike, leave behind their prosperous North Dallas lifestyle because of a genuine commitment to serve God in a foreign land, little do they know that a trap is being set for them that will deprive them of their precious 15-year-old daughter, Brittany. The six-month ensuing, desperate search leads the Terrells into Satan's dark playground in corrupt, debauched sectors of Mexico and challenges their faith in the God they went to Latin America to serve. Deception and failed commitments are their daily portion as the path toward restoration with Brittany plunges them deeper and deeper into heartbreak. When the search finally hits pay dirt, the ending is not the storybook one for which the Terrells have hoped. Vanda shares about her struggle to forgive and heal and her miraculous, personal reminder that God's presence never leaves us even in the midst of shattered dreams and unthinkable pain.
