From North to South
Crossing the mid 90s Germany on an Odyssey, aimless, Kracht's character takes you on a journey through a country he calls "the big machine in the north evermore building and expanding itself". Seldomly I found a better description. Makes you understand them Germans a bit more, problem is, you need to read it in german. But it's well worth it for the oddities and mishaps the young protagonist gets into will make you as well as your "literary" heart smile. Entertaining, well written and extremly fast to read - hervorragend.
Growing up in the eighties
If you grew up in Europe as a teenager in the eighties you must read this book. Christian Kracht's main character is the german 'american' psycho.
The book takes you from Sylt, via Hamburg and Frankfurt all the way down to Zurich. And gives you a glance of the 'jeunesse doree' of Germany.
