Best workout ever
My mother gave me this video for my 24th bday. I told her I wanted an
aerobics video
, and this what she picked out, not knowing what is best on the market. This is one of the best gifts I ever received. I am now 41. I still have it and still do it almost every other day. I mix it with the Standing Legs DVD (I highly recommend the box set: Standing Legs/Upper
body
and Tough Tape 2/5 Day Abs) or Sandahl Bergman's Vol III Video that I picked up years after receiving Vol II. At 41, I am 5' 9" and 125 pounds, thinner than I ever was in high school. I have muscles and guys have actually approached me and squeezed my biceps while standing at a bar with a drink. For a while, I had a membership at 24 Hour Fitness and went to the Power Sculpt or Rep Reebok Group X classes, both of which involved lifting weights, 5 days a week. I went to the gym to do something different and get out of the house, and although my body was toned and looked good, it looked better when I was faithfully doing a
Firm tape
or CD every day as opposed to weight lifting classes at 24 Hour Fit. I highly recommend The Firm. I have a
total
of 9 Firm DVD's and 6 VHS tapes, most of which are in boxed sets. I get everthing at WalMart. I have dumbells, size 1 lbs up to 20 lbs. I have the step up box, the blue and purple one that splits in half - bought at Walmart for $20!! I have 2 pairs of 1-lb wrist weights. I use all the DVD's and tapes, but I always go back to Vol II. That's the one I do every other day and mix in something else on the "off" days.

Great workout classic
I originally bought this tape back in the late 90's, and it was one of my first
Firm workouts
. It is very complete- you get about a half-hour of
aerobics with
light-to-medium weights, then 20 minutes or so of floor work, then a long stretch. It is 65 minutes
total
, but really isn't exhausting. It works every
body part
, but I would say this workout is mostly for the maintenance of muscle, not to build lots of muscle mass. It is VERY 80's, but if you don't mind that, invest in this workout.
Janet Jones leads this workout, and I thought she did a decent job. I have done this tape so much that I could teach it myself, so she can't be that bad(despite her critics). The workout starts out with a warm-up and very thorough stretch. Then it's on to five 5-minute segments of aerobics, one of which is high-
impact
(but it can be modified easily). There is tight music-to-movement synchronicity, so it is quite easy-to-fol
low
and learn. Using heavy enough weight, you will feel this workout. I think it is especially good for women looking to shape their muscles, rather than add on a lot of bulk.
After the cardio, it's on to the floor work. There is ab work(6 minutes worth), push-ups, table work, bridge work with chest presses, outer and inner thigh lifts, and then pec flies and rib cage pullovers to round it out. The final strtch is decent, but watch your knees- she does some moves that would probably not be considered that safe today.
I feel that this is the most thorough Firm workout ever produced, and is a wonderful complement to Body Sculpting Basics. I really wish the Firm would release this on DVD.

Not Low Impact- but definitely the best!
I no longer have a VCR- does anyone know where I can get this on DVD? I can't find it anywhere and because it's copywrighted no place in town will convert it for me. Please hit me up if you have any info on how to find this on DVD.
Older video but definitely does the job
I started doing this exercise tape when I was in high school (18 years ago), and I LOVE it. I wish it was on DVD. I agree that a lot of things have changed in the exercise world since this tape was originally made, but it remains the best workout video I've ever done. If you stick with it, you will DEFINITELY notice a difference in your
body
in 10 workouts.

Perfect for serious exercise
YAY!! I LOVE this one!
I did it so often I know it by heart. I also own most of the
FIRM videos
, and this one is definitely the most difficult of all my exercise tapes. I actually tape recorded it, and when I travel I take my ipod with me and do it to that (since I know the routine).
You should see my
body
, thanks to this tape. It takes an hour and you will sweat! The ab work could be a bit tougher, and you have to stretch your pecs a lot more after you're done, otherwise you feel them hurt too much the next day (stretching helps ease pain and elongates your muscles - something you want!)
It's tough as heck, and Janet can do 32 pushups (full plank man style) as if its nothing... that's the one exercise I have the most trouble with. She's in amazing shape. She's charming and interacts with the others just enough not to be corny.
My fiance' laughed at me when I was doing this... I told him do it once, and then laugh. Heh, he did, and he shut up ever since. Now when I'm doing it he just gulps and leaves the room! LOL I'm slightly exagerating. He is in very excellent shape and he's an athlete, but he realized this is not fluff.

This video misrepresents itself. Although the title is
Low
Impact
Aerobics
, it is not low impact. The cardio intervals include jogging, jumping jacks, and other moves with hops. This is a 65-minute reissue of a 1988 video that features Janet Jones-Gretzky, who is so slim that you can count her ribs through her white leotard, leading a class of fit, gorgeous exercisers (female and male). This aerobic interval workout combines fast cardio (no patterns) with more controlled cardio plus weights, though still at a fast pace. We've learned a lot about exercise since 1988, and these two-second reps with weights are not as effective as slower reps. They are also more likely to lead to injury. Although the video is targeted to all levels, unless you're an experienced exerciser, it's too easy to lose correct form when you're doing such fast reps and aerobic moves at the same time. You might find the weight intervals repetitious (tons of lunges and shoulder presses). A floor-work segment uses ankle weights, followed by a stretch. Unless you miss the old
Firm workouts
, choose one that is more up to date (and therefore safer and more effective). --Joan Price
