A Watered down Fantasia

Make Mine Music is one hour and seven minutes and was released on August 15, 1946. Due to the majority of the Disney staff being drafted into World War 2, there were a bunch of unfinished stories in the Disney studio. Some were too long to be a short and others were too short to be a movie; so ten music segments were put together in the original movie. In the United States DVD, The Martins and the Coys, was cut in the United States DVDs. The reason behind this was the Disney group deemed it to graphic gunplay not suitable for children. Only in the European release is this included. This was the third package film to be put out by the Disney studio; Saludos Amigos was the first and The Three Caballeros was second. The music is played, played and song, song and spoken, or played, spoken and sang. Included in the DVD are three Silly Symphonies shorts. It would not be till 1950 that a full length feature movie to be put out by the Disney Studio. Make Mine Music gets a B-.

Popular music gets the Fantasia treatment

With the typical superior Disney animation, the studio here brings to life several popular 1940's songs plus Serge Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," Ernest Thayer's classic baseball poem "Casey at the Bat," and the fantasy-ballad "Johnny Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnet" (one of my favorite segments), together with an original sequence about Willie, "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met." Young viewers of toady will probably need some explanation as to who the human singers (Nelson Eddy, the Andrews Sisters, Dinah Shore, et al.) were and why they were so popular at the time, but the music is sweet and the overall production values excellent.

Timeless and Classic Disney

My 6 year old daughter heard the music for Peter and the Wolf and wanted to know what it was about. I immediately recalled the Disney cartoon version and looked for it. It is one of several musical pieces on this video. Needless to say, when we first watched the disc we went straight for Peter and the Wolf. Afterwards, we watched the remaining and it just took me back to my childhood watching the Wonderful World of Disney. The music and artistry of the animation are just timeless. Although it is a transfer of old film, the video is just as clear as any new animation on the market. As they say, the proof is in the pudding and frankly my daughter's interest in the video is proof. This is an awesome collection of Disney shorts that I would recommend to anyone!
