First problem with my Philips CD Recorder

It has performed reasonably well since I bought it about a couple of years ago. The recorded discs sound good even when played back on a Wadia 861 (that is the standard one would classify as "the best"). But... recently when I try to record on the new CDs from imation it keeps on displaying the "OPC Error" message and refuses to record. I have read reports from other people and this seems to be quite a common problem that is associated with "disc mismatch". The problem is that you don't know until you buy the blank discs, and if it won't work your whole spindle of CDs will be wasted. Philips' technical support is hopeless, realistically don't expect a reply. In summary, its a good recorder as long as nothing happens, but if it does you're on your own without help.

Not all music CD-Rs work

I bought this CD recorder from a guy who advertised on craigslist. I didn't want to spend much money on a machine like that; it cost me $45. The guy told me to make sure to buy music CD-Rs. I went I bought a Pilips 30-spindle music CD-Rs. To my surprise, none of them ever worked. About half of them became coasters.
I then tried the Memorex brand, and it didn't work. All I got was "OPC error" on the screen. I was about to give up on the machine, and one day I went to a dollar store and bought a 32x Fujifilm all purpose CD. It worked perfectly. Next thing I did was to buy a 50-spindle Fujifilm all purpose CDs.
What I found out is that you have to make sure the CD-R recording speed has to be 32X. Then I bought a 10-pack TDK, and all worked well.
I honestly can't complain for the price I paid. Maybe I just wasted $10 in trial and error. I have been able to transfer tape recordings to CD with this machine. Not everything works perfectly, and I have tried almost everything with this machine, but I learned how to go around the problems.
Now I just copy CDs with my $15 Magic Spin CD burner from Office Depot. It's a lot easier to type the names of songs on the CDs, and they show on the screen of the Philips CDR785.
