IMPORTANT SOURCE FOR WORLD MUSIC
This magazine is a super source for a difficult to understand genre, world music. World music does not get a lot of press in the states and the artists are not widely known. The whole thing is rather confusing, really, because you really don't know who to buy and what the discs are about.
Songlines educates
the reader on the best world music to buy as rated for the month, in the world at the moment, special discs for the month. Reviews of discs so you can find out what is good before you buy it. Interviews with artists, and stories of other artists get you acquainted with international music that really isn't covered in the states. Recommendations, what to stay away from. Also a specific artist catalogue and each disc rated, so you know which ones to stay away from for that particular artist. A source you can't do without for world music.

Fascinating reading and listening
Songlines
is published in the UK, so as a reader in the US, I usually get the most recent issue during the second month it is out, and the concert schedules and most of the advertisements just really don't apply to me. That being said, this magazine is great. The best part for me is the "Top of the World" CD that comes with each issue, including tracks from 10 or so of the top-rated albums reviewed in that issue. For someone like me who is relatively new to world music, these provide a good introduction to some of the really good artists that are out there. The reviews are helpful to read along with the CD, and some of the other articles are also applicable to the music included on the CD. The reviews themselves fill up a large portion of the issue, but then articles about the politics of music in other countries, artists doing new things, "Beginner's Guides" to well-known world music instruments/groups/events fill the rest of the magazine with interesting information. To be honest, I probably would have subscribed to get the CDs alone, but together, the whole package is great for anyone wanting to explore music from around the world.
