Worth the price

We bought the DVD of Holes for my son for Christmas. It is Now 8th January and he has watched it 12 times. He sings along with the tunes and knows the dialogue. He read the book with his Grade 5th class as a chapter book project and loved it. Gave him a love for reading that we have been trying to instill unsuccessfully up to this point. We owe this author a big thank you. The movie is well made. Ratings are Everyone, but some scenes and language really disturbing for little ones.
Otherwise if you have a regular kid like mine--its a great buy.

Damon Medic review of "Holes"

Damon Medic says that if you want to see a film that will grab your interest from beginning to end, then you have to see "Holes." This film has such a unique premise that is set up by a flashback from a Ku Klux Klan murder of a black man because he was caught kissing a white woman. Flash forward to present day that takes place in a camp for juvenile delinquents who are forced to dig holes in the daily heat of a dried lake where it hasn't rained in a hundred years. This is a film that will be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

Enjoyable

All in all, I was quite pleased with this film. It stayed true to the book, most of the boy actors gave respectable performances, and it remained upbeat and interesting. The emotional bits went at a good pace, and most of them didn't reach that scary level of corniness. I feel that most of the critics are just being sticks-in-the-mud--I chatted with a few friends who had never before read the book and they followed it well enough. A little intelligence when viewing a film doesn't hurt. #1. This ain't the first movie to do flashbacks. #2. Louis Sachar didn't write the original novel for pre-schoolers.

My only big complaint was Patricia Arquette. While she was delightful as the cute school marm, I had trouble believing her as a ruthless criminal.

There were a few other rough parts and some spots that, frankly, could have been handled differently. But for the most part, this is a good family film that everyone should enjoy.

Holes

A klutzie boy deals with being falsely imprisoned in a boys camp setup in the desert. He learns how to deal with bullies and comes out ahead. He learns how to forgive and stand up for justice when it is necessary. There is a bit of bad language but for the most part this is a good movie.

Good Book, Great Movie, Great Music

My son was in the sweet spot of the age group Disney targeted for this movie, and having read the book, he insisted this was a must-see, so my wife and son went to the see the movie in the theatre. When she was impressed by the movie, and read the book, I followed suit watching this DVD when it came out, and agreed.

Budding star Shia LeBeouf carries the role of Stanley Yelnats, who is falsely accused of a juvenile crime that lands him at Camp Green Lake (which is neither), where the form of punishment and reform philosophy is that digging holes makes young men stronger. It also enables the crooked camp warden and guards to search for a long lost treasure, which brings together two backstories that are told in flashback and that finally merge into the present action at the climactic finale.

The background music is excellent, not just driving the action but setting the scene with rock, blues, country, and hip-hop sounds that are, like the movie and the book Holes, as mature and well-crafted as any on the movie screen today.

The award-winning bestseller comes to life in this phenomenally fun, adventure-filled movie starring Emmy Award-winner Shia LaBeouf (Outstanding Performer In A Children's Series, Disney Channel's EVEN STEVENS, 2000). Dogged by bad luck stemming from an ancient family curse, young Stanley Yelnats (LaBeouf) is sent to Camp Green Lake, a very weird place that's not green and doesn't have a lake. Once there, he's thrown headlong into the adventure of his life when he and his colorful campmates -- Squid, Armpit, Zigzag, Magnet, X-Ray, and Zero -- must dig a hole a day to keep the warden at bay. But why? Through it all, Stanley and company must forge fast friendships as they try to unearth the mystery of what's really going on in the middle of nowhere. Filled with humor and heartwarming messages of friendship and teamwork, HOLES is a treasure everyone will dig.
