Excellent album!

I was a little skeptical about this as I had only heard one song from it. I feared that it would be similar to other P-tv, like "Beyond thee Infinite Beat", which is ok, but doesn't really go anywhere and quickly gets boring. This is nothing like that. All the tracks are really good (with the exception of Inside, possibly) and just the right length. It reminds me of something that Malcolm McLaren might have done if he was in a particularly dark and weird mood.

-one week later...
OK, I was on the search for this Astrid Monroe chick and came across a lot of negative talk about this CD. Basically, it is being dismissed because it is believed that they are ripping off Portishead. The only thing that Portishead and this CD have in common is the Theremin, and I am pretty sure that this instrument is not copyrighted solely to Portishead. In fact, any band can add this spooky sounding instrument (or even a saw) to their mix if they wish. Of course it will sound like Portishead, or all other bands that have used it before, because, well, that is the nature of the Theremin. As for Genesis's slowed down spoken word, I kind of like it. I only wish that he would have told longer stories, Alistair Crowley style, instead of repeating a few sentences over and over.

Amazing

I was so suprised by this album... I didn't think it would be anything like what it really is.. This album is very moody and electronic and dark... Think of Doubting Thomas with a bit more flow and structure (Doubting Thomas is so great though) or even the likes of Download.... This album grooves and haunts it is really amazing...

Get this album now, it's unbelievably great, a sure thing!!!!!!!!

I have been a Throbbing Gristle / Psychic TV fan since the 80's. I have a huge collection, including most of the CD's of both, as well as alll the great "Splinter test" stuff. So I am a pretty huge fan of Genesis P-Orridge. Yet somehow, some way this release managed to fly under my radar for a couple of years - I had no idea it was out. It just popped up by chance on Amazon's search engine while looking for the new TG CD. So I ordered it, of course, but I wasn't particularly excited about it, it would come in the mail, I would listen to it but maybe only once. WOW, what a surprise I was in for. This album is a masterpiece, there is no other word for it. Words cannot describe what a great CD this is. It is extremely catchy, and extremely interesting. If you are a fan of "Infinite Beat" or "Peak Hour", then you'll really like this - even though it sounds completely different - it's slower, yet somehow no less energetic. In some respects, it is even better than those albums. And the packaging I thought was really cool as well. It's nice to see someone who still gives a damn about innovative packaging. You've GOTTA get this CD, you'll probably end up liking it at least as much as your Throbbing Gristle stuff. More than makes up for the lack of Psychic TV releases in the last 10 years. Ok, ya got it? Get it!

Up there with P-Orridge's best work...

Most solo albums by members of cult groups tend to be for completists only, but this album impresses me more with each listen. I will admit it sounded a little too much like Portishead the first time I listened to it (not that there's anything wrong with that, but I didn't expect someone as unique and visionary as P-Orridge to sound that close to anyone), but there's so much more to this album. The lyrics are very interesting, and the treated vocals sound great. Whether you're into Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, or Genesis P-Orridge's segment on the Disinformation TV series piqued your interest, this album belongs in your collection.

A gem

One of the best albums of the year. When I bought it I didn't expect to like it this much. I could tell from the song titles that it was just more rehashed samples from Gen's old spoken word pieces put to some kind of backing tracks, like that "collaboration" with Merzbow.

While that may be technically true, what we have here are trip-hop beats, spacey synth & theremin, and dubby electronica with Gen's manipulated voice. This is a seriously cool album. Perfect for getting stoned, having sex or just chilling out after a night on the town. It doesn't break any new musical ground, but it's a truly enjoyable ride...and that's a compliment for any album.

As the world awaits the remarkable reunion of Throbbing Gristle and a subsequent studio album from the group, this surprise full-length from Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV founder Genesis P-Orridge, produced by Astrid Monroe, has been slowly coming to fruition and it arrives with perfect timing. The true identity of Astrid Monroe has been kept a secret from all parties involved in the release of this CD. His production work is the only indication we have of who this gifted artist could possibly be. Slow, deliberate and lushly orchestrated, the eccentric instrumentation swirls pensively around audio tracks created by Genesis P-Orridge almost as if he were the leader of a more adventurous Portishead or possibly even Massive Attack. Dark and dreamy, When I Was Young is a surprisingly unique addition to the P-Orridge catalog. It's emphasis on unique word play, vocals and annunciation create an eloquently pronounced lyrical and music journey.
