wonderful works in guitar genre,
The Murail "Tellur" is a fantastic work, in fact when you hear the opening it doesn't sound like a
guitar
, more like electronic music,it begins in the high register, harmonics used, that slowly then decends, the impetus of the work is the flamenco style of playing mixed with these extended techniques, The French avant-garde, French composers are not prolific, they hone single works for months prior to writing, and really only write single works within any genre, (this is Murail's only work for the guitar) The Lachenmann by contrast is a early work before he really discovered his voice and relays, relies on the performers reciting text of Chris Caudwell, activist like stuff that today sounds very dated in a self-conscious way.Lachenmann has more dignity in that although he has sympathies for the human condition tends to keep his politics in within his works rather explicit. This work is the exception. The large register, the pallette of extended techniques used by the two guitars however are incredible, scouring every conceivable timbre never heard; from tapping the bodies of the insatruments, to plucked, scraped, slided, harmonics, finger pluckings with the left hand on the fingerboards. Likewise the Donatoni exploits a large pallette of techniques, and has his typical free flourishes, freely combustible rhythms. The Reich is beautiful the the traditional sense and fosters no surprises within the minimalist universe of predictability.

This is a CD of a broad range of
guitar
duos
and
solos
of modern masters including a rare piece by the famous American minimalist, Steve Reich. These pieces explore texture and timbres from straight-up classical guitar to the extended techniques of spectralist Tristan Murail; a piece for acoustic guitar and tape by Chris Mercer; a witty, innovative piece by Helmut Lachenmann; and an interactive piece for electric guitar and computerized effects by the duo's own Derek Keller.
