Not a Trilogy - A Masterpiece
The
special
extended
version of this movie (or
trilogy
as they prefer to call it) is so much more than what I expected. I understand how scenes must be deleted for theater presentations, but the extended version puts an entirely different spin on the story. So much more is explained and some character development is enhanced through these deleted scenes. I received this set as a gift and have spent many hours not just watching the
movie over and over, but also enjoying all the extra discussions and making of the movie footage. I am not a skilled reviewer, but I have been a
Lord
of the
Rings
fan since childhood. This set brings the books to life and should be saved for future generations to enjoy.

3 Great Films in 1 Box
Peter Jackson's cinematic masterpiece called "The
Lord
of The
Rings
" is just that- a masterpiece. The original films were awesome but now with the
extended
and added scenes and more bonus features they are beyond awesome.

A leaf in autumn
Yeah, you know, colorful, but about to fall off the tree. Actually, in this case, it's not really colorful. But it's about to fall off.
LotR was about the first real book that I read when I was young. While I haven't exactly turned into a rabid fanboy of Jrr, I had definite expectations of how magical this
series
was going to be. With a few exceptions, it falls short.
First, what's good: the Fellowship of the Ring is a very strong start to the series. While definitely less awesome than I expected, it was good in parts, e

ly the council of elrond. The scenery is very... well, unpopulated, but not exactly evocative of Middle-Earth. Gollum. The actual actors look colorless, and lifeless next to him. Gandalf is, well, not the highlight, but definitely not the lowlight. The Ringwraiths are appropriately spooky. The ents are quite well done. IMHO the highlight of the series. The elves reinforcing Helm's Deep was appropriate, I thought. Oh yeah, and Theoden's hall was quite splendid.
What's bad: hobbits. Their one chance of winning my heart was to be wide-eyed, cute, and bumbling. Okay, 1 out of three. While that may be a good batting average, in school it's typically an F. Aragorn is not very believable as the True King. While the Elves are... I dunno, okay, they are far less interesting than they are in the books. The action sequences are decently done, but I never got the sense that anyone was caring about what they were fighting for. Sauron's evil is distant for most of the movies, so it's hard to care if the good guys win or not. There's really not much in the way of magic. The sense of wonder that I first got from reading the series: just not there. In general, the feeling of `wow' never occured. By attempting to make the movie more believable (less magic), they in fact made it less so. To me anyway. I feel that the chief guide to setting the stage of Middle-Earth (the Silmarillion) was largely, probably completely, ignored. Truth be told, I feel a little conned. Furthermore, the last I heard, Jackson had yet to pay the Tolkien estate. Not exactly forthright doins.
However, it's a decent attempt. Kudos to the team for trying.
