Faith of Our Fathers
It was well written by an American hero who will make one of the greatest presidents we've ever had.
A one of a kind memoir by a politician
The worst of humanity is set against a man who exemplifies the best of the human condition; a rare face off in the genre of
memoir
s by politicians. John McCain's self-effacing memoir was published in 1999 at the time of his unsuccessful run against George W. Bush for the Republican nomination for the presidency. It was a blockbuster hit. Re-issued in time for the 2008 election, one expects it to be reborn as a best seller. Unlike most political autobiographies, this book is seemingly factual, well written, organized, highly readable, and revealing of McCain, the man. He writes about his grandfather, father and his time at Annapolis as a midshipman, a naval aviator and a prisoner of war. His style is to say just enough; neither sparse nor overindulgent. Repeatedly self critical, McCain is highly complimentary, even affectionate, to his fellow POWs and tactful in treating with sympathy and not identifying two collaborators with the prison guards. His torture and abuse by the Northern Vietnamese guards is vivid and searing. Pointedly critical of Johnson's handling of the Vietnam war, he is complimentary to Nixon and his mining of Haiphong Harbor stating that it led to the successful Paris peace talks and the relaxation on treatment of the POWs. This is a point of view not often considered when reviewing the war in Vietnam.

It reads like a novel . . .
His story is compelling, and he pulls no punches. Well written, too. Definitely worth reading, especially before the election!
An Inspiring American Story
John McCain's autobiography is a stirring account of perseverance and
family values
that is ultimately a tribute to the will of humanity to prevail. If only more
fathers would
give their sons the lessons that John Sr. instilled in John, our world would be a better place. If only more men had the unwavering self-confidence that John had as a POW, we could all live inspired. John McCain shows us that we can grow as people if we learn to do what's right in the end. After all, he wasn't perfect, but he learned to hold his head high and make his life as perfect as it could be with what he had. Outstanding, altogether.

If you are looking to understand the Presidential Candidate, here is where you should start.
If you were to go to the bookstore or search online, you can find a great deal written about John McCain. You will learn of his upbringing, his history and his record as a politician.
What you will often find lacking is a deeper understanding of the man who may be President of the United States someday.
I decided this election year to try to actually understand the people who are vying to lead our nation, and I began with McCain since he was the presumptive nominee of the Republican party.
The book is not so much a biography but a personal history of three generations of McCain men who have served in the Navy. McCain, his father and grandfather.
You will learn of the values of honor, courage, and commitment and how this unique
family
has chosen to live up to them. You will learn how they all chose to deal with the adverse situations in their lives and were able to place the needs of their country above their own personal desires.
All while remaining true to themselves.
A worthwhile read.
Cheers!

John McCain's grandfather was rail-thin, a gaunt, hawk-faced man known as Slew by his fellow officers and affectionately as Popeye by the sailors who served under him. McCain Sr. played the horses, drank bourbon and water, and rolled his own cigarettes with one hand. More significantly, he was one of the navy's greatest commanders, and led the aircraft carrier of the Third Fleet in key battles during World War II.
John McCain's father fallowed a similar path, one equally distinguished by heroic service in the navy as a submarine commander during World War II. McCain Jr. was a slightly built man, but, like his father, he earned the respect and affection of his men. He, too, rose to the rank of four-star admiral, making the McCains the first
family
in American history to achieve that distinction. McCain Jr.'s final assignment was commander of all U.S. forces in the Pacific during the Vietnam War.
It was in the Vietnam War that John McCain III faced the most difficult challenge of his life. A naval officer, he was shot down over Hanoi in 1967 and seriously injured. When Vietnamese millitary officers realized he was the son of the top commande, they offered McCain early release in an effort to embarass the United States. Acting from a sense of honor taught to him by his father and the U.S. Naval Academy, McCain refused the offer. He was tortured, held in solitary confinement, and imprisoned for five and a half years.
This
memoir
is the story of what McCain learned from his grandfather and father, and how their example enabled him to endure these hard years. It is a story of three imperfect men who faced adversity and emerged with their honor intact. Ultimately,
Faith
of My Father is a story of
fathers
and sons, what they give each other and what endures
