"Doctoral Programs in Accounting: Sponsored by the American Accounting Association; PHD Programs Through 1950, PHD Programs Through 1980; Proceedings of the conference on Doctoral Programs in Accounting sponsored by the American Accounting Association and held at The Ohio State University on June 2, 3, and 4, 1983" (from the book of the title page) "Despite the continuing major shortage of accounting faculty, a critical shortage which has existed for many years, ironically there is one type of accounting degree program on which little literature exists and for which no conference has ever been held previously. Further, no external standards have ever been set for doctoral programs in accounting; yet for both our undergraduate and master degree programs in accounting the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business have established accreditation standards including those for accounting faculty who are expected to have earned a doctorate in an accounting doctoral program. Also, university catalogues on accounting doctoral of other accounting programs. In addition, the number of doctoral programs has increased dramatically in the past decades with the newest programs of ten graduating more students than many of the older programs. In short, surprisingly this is a subject on which little interchange normally exists. As a result of this situation, this first time ever conference was held on June 2-4, 1983 under the auspices of the American Accounting Association at The Ohil State University. This conference was an exploratory one and the papers for this conference were commissioned on an ad hoc basis after a planning committee for the conference met under the Chairmanship of the Association's Director of Education at the Association's convention at San Diego in 1982.
