Compelling
This book is a very good mix of suspense and mystery, and the characters are very well developed. It's a real page turner, so be prepared for a late night of reading.
Another GREAT story from Richard Matheson
This is a great story! As with all his other books, this is a gripping tale that captures the imagination from the first sentence. Don't miss out!

A Stirring Of Emotions
Richard Matheson creates a great supernatural thriller in "
Stir
of
Echoes
" when a routine suburban neighborhood is turned upside down after Tom Wallace's mind is suddenly freed to receive echoes from other people's minds and inanimate objects.
Once again Richard Matheson (who has an extraordinary talent for setting mood very quickly and powerfully) develops a wonderful story out of ordinary existences. The story takes place in a typical suburban community where everyday reality is family, friends, work and socializing. However, once Tom Wallace begins reading thoughts and understanding desires, this normalcy is broken down to reveal the wasted life of complacency and how "we're all monsters underneath" the image we project to others.
"Stir of Echoes" is definitely a story driven by plot, but it does build tension very effectively as Tom Wallace tries to understand his "gut feelings" of dread and death. It is Tom's struggle to understand these "feelings", and the psychological effects which begin destroying him and his family, that provides the tension in the story and makes his horror so real. There is good pulse pounding supernatural scenes crafted by Matheson who builds a sense of overwhelming dread through the emotional confusion of his characters. The confusion of trying to understand the meaning of the "echoes" and attempting to put labels on these experiences provides great suspense throughout the story. "It is amazing how much one is willing to distort belief in the name of reason; how little one is willing to trust the intuitions of the flesh".
Certainly an easy quick read, "Stir of Echoes" has wonderful dialogue and a mood that oozes suspense and dread. Richard Matheson is one hell of a story teller. A short book that effectively combines horror, suspense and mystery.

Tom Wallace lived an ordinary life, until a chance event awakened psychic abilities he never knew he possessed. Now he's hearing the private thoughts of the people around him-and learning shocking secrets he never wanted to know. But as Tom's existence becomes a waking nightmare, even greater jolts are in store as he becomes the unwilling recipient of a compelling message from beyond the grave!
This eerie ghost story, by award-winning author of Hell House and I Am Legend, inspired the acclaimed 1999 film starring Kevin Bacon.
