Carl Barks, Gottfried Helnwein and Donald Duck

Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein has inspired people for the past forty years. But long before Helnwein became an artist himself, he was inspired by the legendary Carl Barks.

Barks, who illustrated and animated for Disney during the company's Golden Age, is responsible for the creation of Uncle Scrooge McDuck, as well as the modern day incarnation of Donald Duck.

Growing up in post-war Austria, some of the first artwork Helnwein saw as a young child was Barks' comic work for Disney. Decades later, Helnwein would not only meet Barks, but he'd also go on to curate and organize Barks' first solo museum-exhibition.

Collected here are some of Barks' earliest Disney work including comics, animation cells and cartoon strips. It's true that the book is in German, but don't let that stop you from picking it up because the images speak for themselves.

It's interesting to see how something so childlike and playful influenced Helnwein's style, and just how eerily close these two artists are similar.
