Better than the First . . .

This sequel to The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1) is very much more of the same: A pop version of greek mythology, set in the life of a contemporary teenager. The order matters, so you should certainly start with the first book in the series.

If you have already read that one, this sequel will not disappoint: Indeed, by not having to lay out the rather laborious introductory material, this book gets to the action (the "quest") more quickly, and is the better for it. This time, our heroes quest takes them through a contemporary version of Odysseus' journey. To give you a flavor of the book, his trials on that trip are the explanation for the Bermuda Triangle, and our heroes endure them so as to recapture the Golden Fleece. If that makes you cringe, avoid these books. If not, enjoy.

I should add that the five-star rating is from my 12-year old son (we read these together). These books are certainly targeted at kids and, unlike, say, Harry Potter, I would not read them on my own. Indeed, we are immediately on to book three in the series at his insistence. If I had my druthers, we would take a break, but they are no chore to partake in. Plus, I admire the authors cleverness in taking the ready-made, brilliant, ancient tales as a source for fun, derivative works.

Can't wait for the next one

Suspensful...engaging...Great Series for young (my 7 and 11 year old) and old 34 - me alike. Its humor sneaks up on you. you may be in the most suspensful part but Percy and his friends can find humor in any situation or the way they percieve reality is humourous for us. The scenery is decribed in such a way you cannot only see your suroundings but you can feel the chill in the air or the scorching sun on your skin....A great family read for bedtime.

Pre-teen son loves this series

My son looks forward to getting every book in this series. Check out my review for "Curse of the Titans".

An Unbelievable Book and Series

I love this series and this book so far is probably my favorite. I love all of the characters, they all have great, unmistakable personalities. The plot is great, the author never runs into a new idea, there is always one point. Once I start reading one of these books I can't put them down. I never thought I was learning anything from these books until I realized I could match all the Greek gods with the Roman gods. i love the way the Greek gods are a little twisted and they have their own personalities. If you haven't read this series, I highly insist you doing so. These are my favorite books ever, and I'm sure you'll love them, too.

Percy Jackson's seventh-grade year has been surprisingly quiet. Not a single monster has set foot on his New York prep-school campus. But when an innocent game of dodgeball among Percy and his classmates turns into a death match against an ugly gang of cannibal giants, things get . . . well, ugly. And the unexpected arrival of Percy's friend Annabeth brings more bad news: the magical borders that protect Camp Half-Blood have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and unless a cure is found, the only safe haven for demigods will be destroyed. In this fresh, funny, and hugely anticipated follow up to The Lightning Thief, Percy and his friends must journey into the Sea of Monsters to save their beloved camp. But first, Percy will discover a stunning new secret about his family -- one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.
