NTSC/Region 0. Considered one of the very first Bebop tenor saxophonists, Dexter Gordon began playing clarinet at the tender age of seven. By the time he was fifteen the precocious tenorist had already played in bands with Chico Hamilton and Buddy Collette! He formed part of the Lionel Hampton and Louis Armstrong orchestras in the early forties, and joined the Billy Eckstine band and recorded with Charlie Parker in 1945. Gordon possessed a very distinctive and profound sound. Some of the best-remembered moments of his superlative career were his tenor battles with fellow tenor saxophonist Wardell Gray from 1947 to 1952 and his leading role as an actor in the film 'Round Midnight in 1986, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Francisco
's Maintenance Shop; a club that also witnessed one of the last filmed performances by pianist Bill Evans. Dexter is heard on three extended tunes. ImproJazz.
