Nice illustrations, story drags on

Based on the rave reviews here, I was very excited to get this book. There are certainly worse stories out there, but I was so disappointed with this one. My 2 yr old daughter will sit through the whole thing, but never requests it (like she does with books like Pinkalicious or Olivia or Goodnight Gorilla), and I don't think it's an age thing--the plot isn't very creative and the whole story gets a bit long-winded (to sum it up: the dinner runs away, so the story details an almost list-like litany of all the places each item on the plate runs off to...didn't capture my attention). On the upside, the illustrations are clear and fun to look at.

Annoying style

My daughter tolerates the reading of this book, but she doesn't look much engaged, and though the writing style is different, I find it annoying. For example, the second page is written in a style: "There was a boy, this boy, lived somewhere, slept somewhere, wore things, examples, had a pet, with a name, and parents, and names, and every day, all year, all weather, ate sausage." The story waffles back and forth between moving forward and back, complete and not. Borrowed from a UK library but definitely will not buy this book.

Really cute

Poor Banjo. He sits down to eat his dinner, the same dinner he eats every night, at his own little table... and it runs away. All of it.

So we read through the whole chase scene, with every (named) bit of furniture or food either ending up happily escaped or unhappily eaten.

It's written in a very talking-aloud style, lots of little asides and such.

I really recommend this one.

A Runaway Hit!

This is our new favorite. My son has wanted to hear this story umpteen times and that is always a sign of a hit. I've had fun with the narrative style in reading it (it lends itself to dramatics and overdone tone), but now my son is trying to steal the show having memorized half the book himself. He takes over on the parts he knows and I fill in the words he missed. As a burgeoning reader, this ability to "read" with me is very exciting for him. I highly recommend this humorous tale to any that love a quirky book. Appropriate for ages 4-8, but duly loved by one five and half year old in this household.

Great Book -- highly recommended!

This is a great book -- very cute and funny. My kids, ages 5&7, love it. The way it's written is very engaging and my kids love to hear the story over and over. This is one of our very favorite books and I've been buying it as a birthday gift for my kids' friends, too.

Talk about fast food! A hilarious, high-speed tale from the inimitable Allan Ahlberg ? catch it if you can!

What happens if someone's dinner decides that, well, it doesn't want to be eaten? For a hungry little boy named Banjo and a savory sausage named Melvin, it's a plight that can only result in a breathless escape ? and what a chase it is! Off speeds the sturdy sausage ? leading fork, knife, and plate, chair and table, a handful of fries with various French names, and three fat little peas ? out the door, down the street, and around the park, with poor Banjo taking up the rear. Will the famished boy ever catch them? And what (gulp) happens to Melvin if he does? Allan Ahlberg is in his element with this fast and funny tale, while Bruce Ingman's kid-friendly illustrations add visual comedy to the chase.
