The Territorial Governors' Papers comprise the files and correspondence of the governors of Washington Territory, from 1853 to 1889. Unfortunately, these files are by no means complete. During those early datys of no copiers or typewriters, much of the day-to-day business was not written down, and often copies of letters were not made. Of the papers which were saved, many were considered by the governor to be his personal property, and they were taken with him when he left office. Consequently, the collections which have survived are framentary and scattered. Nevertheless, the papers which have found their way to the custody of the State Archives are still a very rich source for research into the history of the Washington's territorial period.
