Surround Sound

Good quality sound however not the same as true surround sound with multiple speakers. On the plus side, doesn't take up much room.

Excellent sound

This is an excellent sound bar for the price. It may not produce the full surround sound experience, but then again none of them do. If you have a small room and don't want to deal with all the wires, this is an excellent option. It is easy to hook up and it will product deep rich sounds that sound better than any (non surround) systems I've heard so far. It lets you adjust the sound from the SW, the center speakers, and the surround channels. It makes a great addition to my Samsung LCD

good value

if you insist on super duper sound quality, don't get this one. it is, however, a noticeable improvement over the tv set sound.(samsung plasma) i hooked mine up to my direct tv satellite box with no difficulty. (you will need an optical cable and probably another one for your dvd. as others have noted--no hdmi plug.) the sound is good at moderate levels and it looks good. sound works independent of tv sound. the subwoofer is wired with about a 6-8ft cord to the sound bar. good value at current prices. so-so on the surround sound aspect of it. lot of fine tuning adjustments. i would get it again. meets all my tv needs.

What I Expected

This unit is definitely no replacement for true surround but I knew that going in. If you are looking to simply enhance your tv's speakers then this absolutely does the trick. Easy set up too.

What a difference!

I was rather disappointed with the sound on my new 40-in LCD but this was a secondary TV so I didn't want to invest in another full surround system. This Yamaha 2.1 system is just what I wanted. The clarity of the sound is MUCH better than the TV speakers, especially dialogue. The subwoofer does not have tremendous punch at lower volumes but you can hear it when you turn it up a bit. Like all 2.1 systems it simulates the surround effect, but one thing I like about this system is that unlike most 2.1 systems this one doesn't use SRS. It has real decoders for Dolby Digital and DTS so it is simulating surround based on THE REAL surround data in the soundtrack, not synthesized surround. You can adjust levels for the center, surround, and subwoofer channels. The piano black finish matches perfectly with my TV. I was torn about getting a system with a wireless sub but my room layout works well with the wired sub and I don't have to worry about interference with my home wi-fi. The only ding I can make is that it comes with a plastic cover to hide all the connections on the back of the subwoofer but attaching it it a pain because the screws are short and the holes are very deep. You need a screwdriver with a long shaft and a magnetic tip. The mag tip I had was too wide for the hole. I listened to a lot of 2.1 systems and for the money I think this is a great value for a really nice sounding system.
