Release Date- November 24th, 2009
With VHS releases and than later DVD releases the amazing people at Paramount could have done the right thing, but Paramount refused to restore the cuts that were made to My Bloody Valentine to obtain an R-rating; you see Paramount cares so much about us they don't want the gore to disturb us. Ah Paramount always looking out for out best interests; now here we get the Special Edition DVD distributed by Lionsgate. I really like Lionsgate despite the fact they've gone a little too Hollywood since the success of the Saw franchise, but they are one of the better studios with horror films in general.
The original plan was to release the standard R-Rated version, but the cut gore would appear as a special feature, since they had the footage fans demanded an uncut release and Lionsgate at first declined, but then came to their senses and did right by the fans and My Not So Bloody Valentine could now truly live up to the name My Bloody Valentine.
The Blu-ray release is the same as the DVD, but the only difference is we get the theatrical trailer on the BD, which was for whatever reason left off the DVD release. Left off the disc is the note by the director before the extended version starts; so I suppose it's a fair trade.
THE MOVIE
Solid if not slightly overrated; while I do like the movie a lot I personally wouldn't put this in my top 10 slasher flicks of the 80s; but with that said MBV delivers on what an 80s slasher should. The killer is creepy and the movie is better made than most of its type and unlike most slasher flicks MBV also has some likeable characters. So in the end while I do think the movie is slightly overrated by fans MBV is still an excellent horror flick and the more I think about it MBV just might make it into my top 10 80s slasher flicks.
PACKAGE DESIGN
What drives me crazy is when studios change the original artwork into something modern or in some cases butcher it (look at the DVD and BD of Night of the Creeps). But Lionsgate did a good job with the package design, while it is a little modern it does still keep true to the original artwork most associated with the movie (there are many different posters). Like I said maybe slightly modern, but it still has enough in common with the original artwork to keep it from looking like every newer horror flick.
BLOODLUST: MY BLOODY VALENTINE AND THE RISE OF THE SLASHER FILM- 20:36
Excellent feature that covers the production of the movie and is very informative, but too brief since the final 10-minutes focuses on the 3-D remake; if anything this feature was more of a way to promote the remake, but regardless this was a solid feature that not only covers the film, but also mentions the roots of the slasher flicks, stick around during the credits since one last interview appears. Interviews with George Mihalka, Andre Link, John Dunning, Lori Hallier, Carl Morotte, Neil Affleck, Ken Diaz, Patrick Lussier, Jaime King, Kerr Smith, Gary J. Tunnicliffe, Jack Murray, Paul Zoza, Adam Rockoff
BLOODLINES: AN INTERACTIVE HORROR FILM HISTORY
This is a text feature on the history of slasher flick over the years and the influences; decent feature, but the problem is the text is really small and quite difficult to read where as the DVD version the text is larger and easier to read. Be ready to move really close to your screen to read the text. This was fairly interesting, but nothing special; it seems more like a filler feature than anything else.
DELETED SCENES
This feature has 10 deleted scenes that were cut from the movie so if for some reason you'd rather watch the theatrical cut you can view the deleted footage as a feature. The footage is rough looking, but it's more than watchable. These scenes are what started the legend of MBV. Quite honestly the footage isn't as graphic as you may have heard even for it's time; I can name several movies that came out around the time of MBV that are far more graphic and I can name films released almost 20-years prior that are more graphic. The movie went before the MPAA shortly after the murder of John Lennon and due to that the MPAA came down hard on MBV and would continue to come down hard on the slasher film through out the 80s. Regardless though it's great to have these scenes finally included on a release for the movie; I'm sure most people will watch the scenes inserted back into the movie, but this feature is still solid since before each there is a brief interview with members of the cast and crew; appearing are George Mihalka, Ken Diaz, Thomas R. Burman, Adam Rockoff, Carl Morotte, Helene Udy, Andre Link, John Dunning, Neil Affleck
THEATRICAL TRAILER- 2:09
No need to explain this.
TRANSFER
At the time of the release MBV was 28-years old and I have to say this is one of the best transfers of any 80s horror film; film grain is pretty much gone the only time there is a lot of grain is the opening with the Paramount logo, but the film itself features very little grain or dirt and to be honest I didn't notice any, I'm sure there was possibly a little bit, but odds are you won't even notice it. Of course this is NOT counting the footage re-inserted back into the movie. The colors are sharp and very detailed and like I said this movie was 28-years old at the time of the release and the print looks amazing and is hands down one of the best transfers of any 80s horror flick; for a low budget slasher flick this print is brilliant (for those with the DVD the differences in quality aren't very noticeable and unless you can get the Blu-ray for a low price you aren't missing out on much when comparing the DVD and BD).
My only complaint is the deleted footage that was inserted back into the film is still rough looking; when the DVD was announced and it was said the deleted footage would be an extra feature fans wrote Lionsgate to get the footage put back into the film, which Lionsgate did. Since they wanted to get the disc out around the time the remake was to be released they didn't have enough time to re-master the footage, but with the Blu-ray release, which came months after the DVD why couldn't Lionsgate give the deleted footage a little touch up work? The footage is watchable and I'd rather have it inserted back in the movie rough looking or not, but seeing as this came out so many months later it would have been nice to have the footage fixed up a bit.
AUDIO
5.1 DTSHD Master Audio
Original Mono
The sound quality is very good, but in my opinion never really enhances the movie.
FINAL WORDS ON THE DISC
The Blu-ray release for My Bloody Valentine is excellent, but truth be told the differences between the DVD and Blu-ray are quite small; for those that have the DVD there is no reason to buy the BD. Unless you can get the BD for cheap like I did there's really no reason to buy it since the features are the same with the exception of the trailer, but if you don't have the DVD I would say go with the BD. The deleted footage still hasn't been re-mastered, which is something people wondered if Lionsgate would fix it up for the BD. The release may not be one of the best releases, but Lionsgate did an excellent job for the most part with an excellent transfer and an interesting look at the making of the film. And of course the fact it's finally released uncut is the best of all. Like I said this isn't the greatest release, but it is a good one and highly recommended to fans of the film and would rate in my top 5 releases of 2009, again this is a must for fans of this cult classic.

Complete at last!
I've always been a fan of "My
Bloody
Valentine
". For some reason, as far back as I can remember into the "slasher craze" of the early eighties, this one stands out in my mind, even more so than "Friday the 13th" (although "Halloween" still holds top spot in my memory).
I've owned this on VHS, and the original DVD release of it, and have always loved it, despite it's setbacks; to now have it with all the cut gore scenes restored is amazing! Sure, it's obvious that the restored footage isn't quite the same level of quality as the rest of the film, but what would one expect? It's still almost like watching a brand-new film, rediscovering a classic of the genre.
Others can say what they will; I suppose only a certain branch of hardcore slasher fans love this film (and I'm one of them, t'would seem); most seem to relegate it to a "rip-off" status of the more mainstream films of the day.
For my money, "My Bloody Valentine" has one of the best (and most gruesome) origin stories for it's antagonist, one of the most believable love triangles in all of slasher-dom, and very real and likable characters. The film is paced well, the acting ranges from adequate to very good, and the story is well-written and engrossing, albeit somewhat formulaic, it branches enough in very interesting fashion to stand on it's own merit.
If you haven't seen the film, by all means at least give it the chance of a rental; if you've seen it but not the un-cut version, you owe it to yourself to see the full vision.

Guard your heart.
Had the original on DvD..bought the remake in 3D on blu ray..couldn't pass this up..now if I could only find Sleepaway Camp that would be awesome.
Back in time with a great Blu-ray!
Wow, this is a really great looking BD. For those who don't know: After many years this movie can now be seen in it's original unrated Version, sure you will notice that the new integrated scenes are not of the same quality, but what the hell, now they are here and this moves "My
Bloody
Valentine
" from a sleeping pill to a really good slasher movie. Important for those in Europe: The BD is codefree, so come and get some of this great 80's feeling again.
