    Fleet Foxes35 reviews
Fleet Foxes

Sub Pop, 2008

The Sun Rises On Fleet Foxes
The five-man group Fleet Foxes have a couple of things in common with Nirvana---like Kurt Cobain's legendary rock trio, the Fleet Foxes also hail from Seattle, and they are also signed to Nirvana's old music label, Sup-Pop. But Fleet Foxes are as far-removed as you can get from the "grunge" sound that Nirvana made famous nearly 20 years ago. The music of Fleet Foxes, led by singer/songwriter ...

Just Look Them Straight in the Eye and Say...Pogue Mahone5 reviews
The Pogues

Wea Int'l, 2008

The Mother Lode
My. God. This is no "best of" box set, recycling the same stuff you've already got in your collection...I own just about every official and unofficial recording the Pogues have ever released, and this compilation is almost entirely new to me. Live tracks. Demos. Peel Sessions. Remixes. More than just a box set, this is archival stuff - the recorded history of one of the best (and most ...

The Wiggles: You Make Me Feel Like Dancing1 review
Murray Cook, Anthony Field

Warner Home Video, 2008

My boys can't stop dancing!!
My boys and I love this video. We also purchased "Pop go the Wiggles" this summer, which is cute, but not as much fun as this one. As much as I've said I'm sick of the Wiggles (we're going on 3 years of listening to them!!), I must say I find myself dancing to this one with my 3 and 5 year old boys. It's a lot of fun.

    Revelation32 reviews
Third Day

Sony, 2008

What can I say...
This is the BEST Third Day album. Some will only agree to disagree but I'll say it again this is the BEST work Third Day has ever done to date. It's solid.

Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings116 reviews
Counting Crows

Geffen, 2008

This Album just gets better each time you listen to it.
The first listening of this album didn't grab me like `August and Everything After`, But I found my self singing the lyrics all day, and more I listened, the more it hit me like a ton of bricks. The lyrics start coming through and tie together with songs from previous albums. Once I grasped the meaning I cranked up the volume and it ROCKED! They are all brilliantly written. My favorites at the ...

    Chant37 reviews
Gregorian Chant, The Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos

Angel Records, 1994

PEACE FROM WITHIN
I can't understand most of the latin words in these chants but the spirituality, harmony and the "music" in the monks' voices are refreshing to the soul. I know that several monks sing but you basically hear one voice. I would suggest that a pocket size book with the translation of each chant should accompany each CD.

Easy listening with a touch of rock. Robert stills has it, even better! Also saw the concert, the harmony betweeen the two is fantastic.

    Santogold32 reviews
Santogold

Downtown, 2008

Excellent Electronic Beats and Hooky Vocals if Slightly Overproduced
A lot of artists are content to stay within their genre. And those that do mix genres tend to... well... suck. Santogold strikes a really nice balance, keeping it interesting but also staying on point. Her voice has an almost Gwen Stefani feel to it. Perhaps its the Reggae feel mixed in with pop sounds that reminds me. Some of the tracks also remind me of M.I.A. a bit as well, with beats ...

    Same Old Man23 reviews
John Hiatt

New West Records, 2008

John Hiatt's best in a long while
Never met a John Hiatt album I didn't like, but this one is cream of the crop. For me 'Walk On' was Hiatt's last album for the ages. The self-aware and lackluster follow up, 'Little Head', was a bit of a disappointment and it's been a mixed bag since then. Certainly 'Crossing Muddy Waters' was a stand-out in a stellar catalogue. I was worried when I found out he was working with many of the ...

    Mudcrutch73 reviews
Mudcrutch

Warner Brothers, 2008

Mudcrutch in fine form
This album, for me, is a musical breath of fresh air. Great musicians doing what they love and loving what they do. TP has always been one of my faves. 'Wildflowers' is one of my top five. He's definitely one of the best live acts I've seen and his radio show on XM is a riot. If you like The Wilburys, you'll love this disc. Enjoy!

The Mystery Of Santo Domingo De Silos Gregorian Chant From Spain8 reviews
Dom Ismaael Fernandez De La Cuesta, Chorus of Monks from the Abbey

Deutsche Grammophon, 1994

Gregorian Chant as it should always be!
The monks of Santo Domingo de silos follow the rites and traditions of the ancient Mozarabic period of Hispania (modern day Spain). This period stemmed from the Visigothic period of control over the former Roman protectorate. And from this period throughout the generations this form of pure, magical and yet authentic chant has been saved and will continue to be saved. I brought this CD initially ...

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

Mountain Apple Company, 1993

Russert memento
I purchased this CD because it contains the version of Over the Rainbow that was played at the end of Tim Russert's recent funeral service. Amazingly, an actual rainbow appeared over the Kennedy Center site of the service in DC at the same time.

    Kind of Blue679 reviews
Miles Davis

Sony, 1997

I don't know much about jazz, but I'd be more than "Kind of Blue" if I didn't have this CD
"Kind of Blue" is described by people who know a lot more about jazz than I do as the definitive jazz CD. It and "Coltrane Plays the Blues" are my two favorites. Just can't beat Miles and the Trane. Just put it in and leave it on the continuous play feature. It's that good. Rebecca Kyle, May 2008

Sensual Bellydance

StratoStream - World Dance New York, 2007

Sensual is Right!
This video has a lot going for it, not the least of which was the price. It was much longer than anticipated. There's a long technique section, a warm up, a short-short shimmy section, and a choreography teaching section. And she repeats the entire choregraphy teaching twice with different camera angles. One shows what her hips and legs are doing and the other shows exactly what her arms are ...

Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality42 reviews
Pema Chodron

Sounds True, 2004

Something everyone should listen to
This CD set is taken from a series of classes given by Pema Chodron to help us to understand that we can have some control over the thoughts and emotions that enter our minds. Although meditation is the primary tool used by Buddhists to be become of aware of and work with thoughts and emotions, the information given by Pema Chodron is not specific to meditation. We all have trouble dealing with ...

Chant: Music For The Soul13 reviews
Gregorian Chant, Recorded Sound

Decca, 2008

Sublime
I've been interested in Gregorian chant for at least 35 years. Over the years, I have recordings of the chant on cassette & a couple on CD, but this is by far the best. I purchased it on the the strength of an article in the New York Times in late June/early July about the monastery and the recording of some of their daily chant that they had agreed to do; I almost never purchase things on the ...

Beck

Interscope Records, 2008

No Guilt
I look forward to listening to further. At this point I would not call it groundbreaking Beck work among my top favorites of his albums, already after a few listens I can tell it's a grower and expect to love it further with every future listen.

superlative hooks
Outrageous genius. The catchiest dance album I've heard in five years. This is one of those "something new" moments in music that come along only once in a long while but change everything once they do.
