Repentance2 reviews
Lee "Scratch" Perry

Narnack Records, 2008

The Mad Genius Brings it Hard
It would be interesting to be able to spend the day inside of Lee Perry's head. Some of the stuff he comes up with is so far out there that you have to scratch your head then laugh. "Repentance" is the latest release of Lee Perry. It's impossible to categorize this album into any single genre. At its core it is a reggae album, but with a heavy dose of synthesizers and an overall funky vibe. ...

The Ultimate Collection5 reviews
Lee "Scratch" Perry

Hip-O Records, 2000

very nice
While no collection of Lee "Scratch" Perry will ever be a complete one (even the wonderful 3cd set "Arkology," and its 3cd counterpart "Lost Trasures of the Ark") due to the fact that Perry was so prolific a recorder, this collection is a very nice overview of Perry's heyday, from the late 60's to the infamous burning down of the Black Ark. All of the tracks on this collection were top hits after ...

Amazing dubs and soul
This is one of my most valued sets in my entire collection. The grooves in it are so thick with bass. The vocals are deeply soulful. Many tracks induce hypnosis and involuntary swaying. Every cut, every dub is classic. I'm at a loss for words to describe how amazing, how mesmerizing these performances are. They're superbly arranged / produced. As strong an example of the beauty of analog ...

Hidden Gems of DEEP Dub
Trojan has been releasing a lot of these 2-CD artist compilations under the Sanctuary label. They are a fantastic value. They basically take some back catalog albums that have been out of print (usually ones that have been in demand). Then remaster them and fill up 2 cd's with as many albums as possible (usually 3), then fill up any remaining space with some other unreleased tidbits they think ...

Time Boom X De Devil Dead4 reviews
Lee "Scratch" Perry

Probably the best reggae album I have ever listened to.
As a longtime listener of space music and experimental/industrial, it is not often that I find reggae music that approaches the creativity of these genres. Much of the music produced by Adrian Sherwood can indeed be considered a reggae form of industrial/experimental, and this album is no exception. Combine the experimental influences with hard charging dance rhythms and Lee Scratch Perry's ...

Scratch Came, Scratch Saw, Scratch Conquered
Lee "Scratch" Perry

MEGAWAVE RECORDS, 2008

Dub reggae legend Lee Scratch Perry delivers a follow-up to his Grammy-nominated collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Steve Marshall and producer John Saxon. Perry continues to create unique, category-defying music. For the uninitiated, Lee Scratch Perry is one of the most important figures in the history of reggae music. Not only did he help develop the early reggae sound captured in a number of important recordings, but as an engineer, ...

Panic in Babylon3 reviews
Lee "Scratch" Perry

Narnack Records, 2006

Nice Album!
I first heard the track "I Am A Psychiatrist" on my Sirius satellite radio, and I was immediately hooked! This track is so BOMB (good) that I wanted to buy the cd immediately. I listened to samples of the rest of the disc at my local record store with equal approval. While many fans consider Scratch an icon in reggae music, I have generally been disappointed with a lot of his works (bad ...

I hope you overstand
Shot through with genius and dementia, the murky sound quality only adds to the hallucinogenic, dream-like quality of this classic from Perry's Black Ark era. Features the mooing cow, crying baby and ascending jet sounds as musical elements (as opposed to sound effects). Complaints about the sound quality miss the point. From what I've read about Mr. Perry in his Black Ark period, the murkiness ...

African Roots from the Black Ark5 reviews
Lee "Scratch" Perry

Sanctuary Records, 2006

Mesmerizing
Super-cool CD. According to legend, Lee Scratch Perry "rescued" two starving African musicians who'd been abandoned in Jamaica. The results are EXCELLENT. There are no vocal-free tracks, however, since the vocals are not in English, they are not distracting, and in fact are mesmerizing. There have been earlier CDs containing some of these tracks, but this remaster is MUCH better sounding and ...

Heartbeat / Pgd, 1999

Find the roots ska-rocksteady-reggae connection
This is an excellent album for those who want to explore the Upsetters ska/rocksteady, though not much on dub this is the album for the hard core ska fanatics & skins who can seek a connection to reggae & rocksteady. For those dub enthusiast you can feel the roots in this album. If your a roots enthusiast this is a good sample.

Jamaican E.T.4 reviews
Lee "Scratch" Perry

Sanctuary Records, 2002

Jamaican visionary
Lee "Sratch" Perry is a living legend and when genius beckons you should take note. If you are familiar with some of his old stuff than you will be pleased to see the master of the controls, twisting and turning the boards and tweeking his sound is putting out some pretty spacey vibes. I guess the name of the disc suggests his otherworldliness. He composes all the music and adds his haunting ...

The End of an American Dream3 reviews
Lee "Scratch" Perry

MEGAWAVE RECORDS, 2007

long live the true king of reggae
The title track of The End Of An American Dream is the killer for me. That's a very heavy track. It's like a heartfelt lament - brings the tears to your eyes, for real. I also like 'Disarm' - it's a good anti-war song. The album starts and finishes with the same mantra - 'Disarm, Disarm, Drop Arms...' Then there's 'Memories' which is really dark. Are those crows in the mix? It's amazing how Lee ...

Classic
This album is genius. Just listen to "Angel Gabriel in Space Boots." "Free Us" and "Happy Birthday Marcus" are basically the same tune. "Supersonic Man" is real trippy- maybe TOO trippy- but it's still an awesome album! Lee "Scratch" Perry is SO underrated.

The Upsetter Selection: A Lee Perry Jukebox1 review
Lee "Scratch" Perry

Sanctuary Records, 2007

Judgement Inna Babylon
To the best of my knowledge this is the first time "Judgment Inna Babylon" has made it to CD, and that alone makes this set worth all your lunch money. In it, Lee Perry makes the claim that Chris Blackwell is a vampire who killed Bob Marley. "Scratch" also lets us know the he, himself, doesn't drink the blood of chickens. Hilarious! He was, however, a big fan of the Colonel Sander's chicken as he ...

This is the one you want
I've been buying various Lee Perry/Upsetter compliations and Lee Perry productions over the past few months. I love all that Black Ark stuff, but everything else absolutely pales compared to this. In a word, incredible. "Super Ape" is available from Amazon.co.uk. Got it for less than $20 including shipping.
