The Well-Tempered Synthesizer14 reviews
Wendy Carlos

East Side Digital, 2001

Kudo's for Wendy Carlos
Wendy Carlos does an excellent job of updating all of the Classical pieces on this CD, as well as on all of her other CDs. I originally had this on Open Reel Tape, and am really happy that she has ported it over to the CD format! All of the selections on this CD can only be termed as "stirring" and it is enjoyable to hear each time it is played.

Switched-On Bach39 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Wendy Carlos

Scary Music
I can honestly say that I've never heard another album or song in my life that transports the listener to such an alien realm. The music is so byzantine, layered, precise, fast....its a trip. I jokingly told my son that this is the music that robots listen to. Its more like what robots might dream. Amazing and breathtaking in its complexity, heightened by the precision of programming and ...

Stanley Kubrick's Clockwork Orange (1971 Film)31 reviews
Various Artists, Ludwig van Beethoven, ...

Warner Bros. Pictures / Sunset Strategic Marketing (SSM), 1990

Prisoner 6 double-five 3-2-1
The soundtrack album of CLOCKWORK ORANGE, even with it's simple (and supposedly) outdated Wendy Carlos recordings, holds up far better than the actual film has over these 36 years. This story takes place in the 1990s, and we all know that today's world is nothing like Anthony Burgess' dismal and nightmarish vision . . . don't we? Most of the CLOCKWORK ORANGE soundtrack's classical selections ...

Video Games Live, Vol. 13 reviews
Peter Griffin, Wendy Carlos, ...

Angel Records, 2008

Worth Every Penny
Video Games Live Vol. I music album. Trust me to everyone who is considering buying a copy: it is worth it. The more people who buy this album, the more sales they will get, and the more chance VGL Vol. II will come. Jack Wall actually said he wants to make AT LEAST four albums, and that won't happened unless this album is successful. So if you know anyone who enjoyed this album and pirated it, ...

Switched-On Boxed Set44 reviews

East Side Digital, 1999

A few thoughts on the SOBoxed....
I just happened upon this set of reviews on Amazon (although I had reviewed the original SOB separately years ago), and was delighted at the multitude of very favorable reviews by others. But then came the weeds amongst the fruit, namely those few reviews by people who just did not 'get it'. The Amazon 'editorial reviewer' should get an award for the most ignorant and condescending review ever ...

The Incredible Film Music Box6 reviews

Silva America, 2005

Excellent collection with fine performances
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John ...

A Clockwork Orange: Wendy Carlos's Complete Original Score42 reviews
Wendy Carlos

Warner Bros. Pictures, 1998

Scary, yet wonderful! A real horrorshow!
This album contains all the tracks that were originally suppose to be in the movie. However, Kubrick chose to alternate between the synth versions and classic orchestra. I think that if all these versions made by Wendy were in the movie, in my opinion, the film would be even better! Check especially out the extended version of timesteps which is scary and really intense, and makes you wonder ...

Sonic Seasonings + [Enhanced CD]24 reviews
Wendy Carlos

East Side Digital, 2003

Amazing Audio Journey
I first discovered this wonderful album as a two disk vinyl set checked out from the public library. Synthesizers were my high school fascination and I'd already discovered Tomita's "Pictures at an Exhibition" & Wendy's (then Walter Carlos') "Switched on Bach". But this... there was nothing like this, nothing I could even compare it to. Each side of the two albums was a season (Sonic Seasonings), ...

Switched-On Bach II11 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Wendy Carlos

East Side Digital, 2002

Staggering for the time, holds up well today
Switched-On Bach II (along with The Well-Tempered Synthesizer) really shows what the analogue Moog gear could do in the hands of people who knew what they were doing. The performances hold up and the arrangements make the most of the material. This is Bach, after all, so that's a pretty tall order. Wendy and Rachel's experience on the earlier albums shows. After nearly 40 years Switched-On ...

Tron3 reviews
Wendy Carlos

EMI Gold, 2006

A Soundtrack Where The Music Takes You to Another World
As someone who is a big fan of movie soundtracks and in particular of film scores, I initially took an interest in the "TRON" film score when browsing Amazon for another film CD and just happened to come across the "TRON" soudtrack. After checking out the short sound bites and after reading a lot of raved reviews on it, I decided to check out the film for the first time. When looking for the ...

Silva America, 2005

"Dr. Strangelove, The Shining & Spartacus ~ Kubrick"
One can only thank Silva Screen for releasing a Tribute album "2001: Music from the Films of Stanley Kubrick", featuring just a handful of films and scores from writer/director Stanley Kubrick......but what an impact they have made on audiences everywhere over the years...his shoes are not easy to fill in the world of film making. Did I mention Peter Sellers manifesting his talent enough for ...

Rediscovering Lost Scores, Vol. 13 reviews
Wendy Carlos, Wendy / Elkind, Rachel Carlos

East Side Digital, 2005

Treasure Trove of Cinemagic
In between her pioneering classical transcriptions and her groundbreaking explorations of new timbres and tunings, Carlos was also called upon to score a few films. Of these only one, "A Clockwork Orange," has been adequately represented by an official soundtrack album and a second album of original music written for the movie. Her score for "Tron" wasn't released on CD by Disney until 2001, ...

Switched-On Brandenburgs3 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Wendy Carlos

East Side Digital, 2002

Wonderful from Beginning to End!
Concerto #3 was incredible on the original Switched-On Bach album, and remains one of the best performances in this collection. Concerto #4 is from the Well-Tempered Synth. #5 from Switched-On Bach II. I tried hard to pick up the "glitch" mentioned by the other reviewer, but there is nothing strange to my ear. The tonalities are unusual, but nothing too far out. I got all of the above as part of ...

Beauty in the Beast11 reviews
Wendy Carlos

East Side Digital, 2003

The end of a long period of Tragic Unavailability
I have proudly owned a copy of the first release of this CD all these years. It is the best example I know of an utterly brilliant recording being tragically unavailable. As other reviewers note, the tuning does sound strange at first, but then one realizes how quickly one not only adjusts to it, but starts to hear it as natural and normal. Do yourself a favor and get this CD now. It is ...

A wedding minister's review
I just love this album. I am a wedding minister and many couples ask me about music for their ceremony. I am happy to recommend they buy this album for a wonderful selection of wedding music both traditional and contemporary performed by orchestras, keyboardists, harpists and others including a lovely soprano. One disc is traditional wedding selections and the other is contemporary. The ...

Secrets of Synthesis4 reviews
Wendy Carlos

East Side Digital, 2003

Analog Synth basics with Extras.
Wendy starts this program by pointing out the general characteristics of the sine, square analog white noise and builds from there. Envelopes and filters are covered extensively and she makes use of her own library of recordings as examples. I enjoyed her talk on the early development and use of vocoders and of her work with the Late Robert Moog. Many changes of early synth development were a ...

Rediscovering Lost Scores, Vol. 22 reviews
Wendy Carlos, Wendy / Elkind, Rachel Carlos, ...

East Side Digital, 2005

Finally and Fulfilling!
Believe the hype, _Shining_ fans. These bits and pieces of music - volume 1 focuses more on "studio music and textures" of the themes devised for the film while volume 2 spends its allotted tracks on the more fully developed orchestra tracks - hold just about everything. I'll encourage you to follow that impulse/interest and add this work to your collection. What do you get? Well, for me, the ...

Tales of Heaven & Hell22 reviews
Wendy Carlos

East Side Digital, 2003

my apologies for getting it wrong the first time.
When I first heard this album a few years ago, I honestly was a little disappointed. To summarize the review I posted at that time (which Amazon was kind enough to remove at my request), I felt the album to be a little contrived. It felt "overworked" to my ears, as it was something of a contrast to the (seeming) simplicity of many of Ms. Carlos' earlier efforts. I also felt the more "humorous" ...

Switched-On Bach 200024 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Wendy Carlos

Telarc, 1992

In what way inferior?
It's not inconceivable to me that someone who has spent a lifetime listening to a broad range of music could prefer Carlos's debut recording of Switched-On Bach to the collection, but from any objective viewpoint it IS indefensible. Not only has Carlos brought to bear a quarter century's booming tech innovation, but also a quarter century's musical experience from a unique vantage point atop the ...
