Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, Book 1) 1325 reviews Terry Goodkind
Tor Fantasy, 1997
Goodkind's best
I've been reading fantasy for quite a while, and I decided it would be fun to share my thoughts on debut novels, which is something I'm interested in. Wizard's First Rule is Goodkind's first and his best. I wouldn't say it breaks new ground, but there are several ideas I had not seen before. ...

A Storm of Swords: Book Three of A Song of Ice and Fire (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3) 748 reviews George R.R. Martin
Spectra, 2002
great but wait
+ Every book, every page, every word better than the last. + swords and kings etc
best start to a fantasy series i've read. But definitely wait till they last 3 installments come out before diving it. It's no fun to wait a few years between books.
it's the best of the first four books (that are out now)

Luck in the Shadows (Nightrunner, Vol. 1) 100 reviews Lynn Flewelling
Spectra, 1996
Luck in the shadows
+ Best for the characters + Is is possible to fall in love with a trilogy of books? Yes, I think.
Another great book from this author, it is really difficult to put it down and you find yourself not wanting it to end, great escapism and very well written. You really need to have the whole trilogy to hand though because once you finish this one you will, I gurantee start on No. 2.

The Baker's Boy (The Book of Words, Book 1) 97 reviews J. V. Jones
Aspect, 1996
It's all in the delivery
+ Thoroughly enjoyed + There's Never Anything Original Anymore. It's All in the Telling
As a long fan of fantasy, I would first have to acknowledge that the overall plot of this story is pretty standard. This, however, was not a deterrent with a cast of personalities that were interesting and (just as importantly) stayed true to form. The guardsmen were lewd, the evildoer was ...

Pawn of Prophecy (The Belgariad, Book 1) 357 reviews David Eddings
Del Rey, 1986
Brings Back Memories
+ Good Book, poor reading
I had first been introduced to the Belgariad Series when i was about 13 years old, around the same time that the books had just come out. I remember vividly because i was able to buy the first 4 books then had to wait almost a year to get the last in the series.
It was the first fantasy series ...

Black Sun Rising (The Coldfire Trilogy, Book 1) 144 reviews C. S. Friedman
DAW, 1992
Amazing
+ Combo of Sci-Fi and Fantasy
To start, this is a difficult book to read for some reason. I have given it to several avid readers and they hated it at first, but after rereading it they loved it. I dont know if it is the language, writing style, or what, but it is not a light easy book to pick up.
It is probably the single ...
