Stephen King

Signet, 1997

First King Experience

+ It takes long thoughts to see this novel as a strong work
+ Flawed, but still good

This was the first Stephen King book that I ever read. I saw it at a 2nd hand store and figured for $5 I couldn't go wrong. Well I have to say when I opened it that night after work I could not put it down! This book was amazing! The intese details paint a perfect picture. Definately a good read.

Le Playboy3 reviews
Chester Brown

Les 400 coups, 2001

Personal experience and serialization

+ A poignant, touching story of lonely adolescence

For the man who complained of Chester's work being nothing more than a tool for the elite to further distance themselves, I tell him not to base his reaction to this fine work on the snide remarks of a few poseurs. If you were to tell me you did not understand Chester Brown's work, I would have ...

King-Cat Classix2 reviews
John Porcellino

Drawn and Quarterly, 2007

Zen, exhilirating, intimate--the everyman's story

+ I agree--this is excellent!

King Cat Classix is a "selected works" of John P's past ten years' of work, and it is a hefty book! I couldn't wait for it to come out and read other reviewers, but now I'm honored to be the first. This tome is full of comics ranging from dreams, childhood memories, Zen parables, elegies to his dog ...

True Porn1 review
Ivan Brunetti, Laurenn McCubbin, ...

Alternative Comics, 2003

for fans of indy/ underground and erotic comix!

My friend loaned me this book and I haven't returned it, it's sitting next to my fave chair. . . that's how good it is. I am fixing to buy me a copy of it and the vol 2 as well. Definetely not for people looking for a quick fix/ stroke book. Most of these stories really challenge the preconcieved ...

David Chelsea in Love3 reviews
David Chelsea

Reed Graphica, 2003

A very blunt look at life

+ In Love With "Love"

I picked this book up at used book store for $5.00 the other day not knowing anything about the artist or the storyline. As an aspiring aritst myself and hopeful graphic novelist I found it very inspiring. I love how the characters are no sugar coated. Not even himself. He's not a hero and the ...

John Porcellino

La Mano, 2005

Seriously impressive work

+ Poetry in the form of comics
+ Great book

Some of the finest and most considered autobiographical comics in an absurdly glutted field. Keep your eye on John Porcellino.

The Fixer: A Story from Sarajevo2 reviews
Joe Sacco

Drawn and Quarterly, 2003

Sacco's Sarajevan Search

+ One of the best books I read last year

Just to be clear, this is not a graphic novel, as some people are saying. It is graphic non-fiction, or graphic reportage, occupying a gray area somewhere between newsprint, photojournalism, memoir, cartooning, and essay. Sacco's first such book on Bosnia, Safe Area Gorazde, is a classic -- and ...

Mister I1 review
Lewis Trondheim

Nantier Beall Minoustchine Publishing, 2007

Visual gags with creative graphic novel twists are the hallmark of MISTER I

Visual gags with creative graphic novel twists are the hallmark of MISTER I, a simple, fun little man who appears in full-color, tiny panels of wordless mishaps. Anticipate a series of strange, fun adventures in this wordless graphic art piece which may require an attention to smaller details than ...

Chris Ware

A Rarity These Days

+ Wared Out
+ amazing

I've always enjoyed Mr. Ware's contributions to the genre, but this book....What can I say?! Amazing! Not only are the storylines dense, engaging, and complex, but the book itself is achingly gorgeous. Beautifully bound, a larger size, and with such lovely cover design, it could easily be mistaken ...

Alec: The King Canute Crowd1 review
Eddie Campbell

Top Shelf Productions, 2000

An Inspiration

It's extremely gratifying to see Eddie Campbell's Alec collected again and available on Amazon. I remember reading these comics back in the mid-80's. Self-published by photocopier, often with hand-coloured covers, they redefined for me what comics were about, and what they could be about. These ...

Stuck in the Middle: 17 Comics from an Unpleasant Age4 reviews

Viking Juvenile, 2007

Middle School May Have Made Me What I Am Today...

+ Unjustly Lambasted?

...but only in opposition and it sure felt like hell going through it. I bought this book to leaven the whole experience of my daughter applying to public middle schools here in Brooklyn. Awkward and Definition: The High School Comic Chronicles of Ariel Schrag2 reviews
Ariel Schrag

Touchstone, 2008

Love love love these books

+ Beautiful, rough, brutal, honest, awkward

I'd already read Ariel Schrag's POTENTIAL, so I knew how astoundingly talented she is -- how painfully honest and beautifully hilarious her work is. When I was finally able to get my hands on a copy of her first two graphic novels, I tore through them in an afternoon, then slumped over on my couch, ...

Lost Souls229 reviews
Poppy Z. Brite

Dell, 1993

A great book.

+ Gratuitous, indulgent, and wholly enjoyable to the right kind of reader. Strongly recommended
+ My favorite book

LOST SOULS was Poppy Z. Brite's first novel. Sixteen years later, it is STILL a powerhouse novel. Beginning during Mardi Gras in New Orleans, we are introduced to a few vampires. Christian is our main focus at this time, along with a young girl named Jesse. It isn't long after Jesse wants to ...

Dork: Who's Laughing Now? (Dork Volume 1)2 reviews
Evan Dorkin

SLG Publishing, 2001

Greatness in Panel form

+ What Do You Call A Dog With Wings?

Evan dorkin is a genius, in my opinion. He creates strips that are bitingly funny with an underlying hint of Black Comedy. "Murder Family" is so sick it's good, "Fisher Price Theater" is sheer genius, and his collections of three-panel strips are simply hilarious. Check out "Phil the disco ...
