Roma, Cittą Aperta (Open City) (Import - All Region) 1 review
South Korea
A realistic tribute to Italy's freedom-fighters...
The experience of defeat and occupation with the daily humiliations, was happily not one that the Americans or British had to undergo... But for those countries which did suffer under the frame of foreign oppression--France, Italy, Czechoslovakia and Poland--the experience left a heritage of ...

Pin-Up Girl 17 reviews Betty Grable, John Harvey
20th Century Fox, 2006
"We should have used our imaginations"
+ Art imitates life as Grable plays "The Pin Up Girl" + Finally, Grable on DVD!
Skewering her real life role of a pin up girl, this 1944 movie stars Betty Grable as Lorry Jones a pretty and feisty young girl who works for the USO and is heading for Washington DC. Aboard the train, a conversation with friend Kay (Dorothea Kent) reveals that the pair isn't headed for the USO, ...

This Land Is Mine 3 reviews Charles Laughton, Maureen O'Hara
Highly relevant today
+ Another courage expression and dignity! + Wartime in occupied Europe
The movie told of the early days of a small town in France under German occupation. How the townsfolk responded and reacted to the shrewd and manipulative German leadership? For one, the mayor and the business owners were speculators and still made good money out of the situation. To the middle ...

Guadalcanal Diary 26 reviews Preston Foster, Lloyd Nolan
20th Century Fox, 2002
Guadal Canal Diary
+ OLD MOVIE + I hate amphibious landings
The is a great movie for a WWII buff. I saw it first in our local movie theater back in the 1950s and really enjoyed it. It is, of course, somethng of a propoganda piece but still a great movie to watch. I highly recommend it.
DVD quality was fine.

Wartime classic - Bogart, Massey & crew deliver the goods!
+ Delivering the Goods... + THIS IS ONE GREAT MOVIE............
They didn't sail powerful destroyers or fill the skies with waves of carrier-borne fighters, but the men of the US Merchant Marine nevertheless fought and won the second world war's most crucial and consistently bloody battles - the Battle of the Atlantic. This excellent film follows the travails ...

Passage to Marseille - Authentic Region 1 DVD from Warner Brothers starring Humphrey Bogart, Claude Rains, ... 3 reviews
Warner Brothers
One of the best of the "patriotic" war time movies
+ The devil is in the other side!
Distributed in 1944, the movie reassembles many of the original cast from "Casablanca"- Bogart, Lorre, Greenstreet and Rains to produce a fascinating movie. The movie represents a microcosm of 1940 France. Each of the characters brings to life a France conflicted. Bogart plays Matrac a crusading ...

North Star 2 reviews Anne Baxter; Dana Andrews; Walter Huston; Ann Harding; Erich Von Stroheim

Nice piece of PRO Soviet WWII Propaganda
I was really surprised by this film in that it is pure WWII gold (i.e. Soviet people are good and Nazi's are bad). No mention is made in any shape or form to the millions killed by Stalin and the irony of it all is that this film is set in the Ukraine; site of the Soviet ordered famine which killed ...
