Giacomo Puccini: Tosca
Mosco Carner

Cambridge University Press, 1985

This book is intended primarily as a guide for the opera goer. It includes a synopsis of the plot, with indications of the themes and motifs used in it, and discusses the style of the opera, Tosca being a typical example of Italian naturalism in operas, verismo. It compares Puccini's libretto with Sardou's play La Tosca, analyses the close-knit structure of the work and examines salient points ...

An opera lover's delight!

+ Inside Tosca's Rome

Tosca Vocal Score (Dover Vocal Scores)1 review
Giacomo Puccini

Dover Publications, 2003

Inexpensive but not without errors/omissions

Just started work on the Act I duet (Mario! Mario! Mario!) and have found an incorrectly notated dotted quarter-note. Little things like that make me wish I had spent a few more dollars on the Ricordi edition. My rating is higher than one star only because the price is low.

Puccini, Malfitano

Elektra / Wea, 1993

Amazing!

+ Fantastica!!!
+ A Tosca for all times..

Please, everyone, see this movie! Is wonderful! Catherine Malfitano shines as Tosca, giving the charactar all of the dramatic dephth that is required. PLacido Domingo is the ideal Mario (duh!). Ruggero Raminondi is a very evil Scarpia, and you won't forget him. Filming on the actyal location added ...

INGVAR MI FAI DIMENTICARE IDDIO

+ A truly first-rate Tosca!
+ An irresistible Cavaradossi

I love Puccini, who does not? Tosca is a great opera and, yes I admit I always thought that Callas, was the best Tosca, and Ramey the best Scarpia. But..now we have Vixell. And my friends he is not a Scarpia, HE IS SCARPIA. In this record Caballe and Carreras are OK. They are not my favourite ...

Burton D. Fisher, Giacomo Puccini

Opera Journeys, 2000

Mini-sized guide laden with maxi-helpful information

The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is just wonderful; it's like a "Cliff Note" of the opera, and extremely informative and educational. I particularly like the size; these guides are not cumbersome and fit right into my shirt pocket. The ladies will find sufficient room in their pocketbooks. ...

Tosca: Full Score1 review

Ricordi, 1999

Great resource!

Really clear engraving and authenticity to the work. I'm a full-time collaborative pianist and coach, so a resource like this is really useful. In order to translate the instructions for stage and musicality, you will need an Italian dictionary!

Tosca's Christmas2 reviews
Matthew Sturgis

Frances Lincoln Publishers Ltd, 1991

Beautifully drawn

+ Tosca's Christmas

Tosca's Christmas is full of Anne Mortimer's beautiful, lifelike illustrations of a very real-looking and acting pleasingly-plump tabby. It paints a somewhat realistic picture of Christmas from a cat's perspective -- all that unwelcome commotion, and not being allowed to actively participate when ...

The perfect melding of music and drama.

+ Love the entire Black Dog Opera Library Series

It was once said that Puccini's "La Boheme" was all music and no drama, while "Tosca" was all drama and no music.
