Atonement: A Novel756 reviews
Ian McEwan

Anchor, 2003

Loved it!

+ Fascinating reading
+ Great Book - Preferred the movie

I almost gave this novel 4 stars, because there was a point at the near-end where I didn't like where the author was going. But in the last pages, he redeemed himself, and I see why it *had* to be told the way it was. That being said, I loved Atonement. It is one of the best books I've read in ...

Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year152 reviews
Anne Lamott

Ballantine Books, 1994

A must-have for new mothers

+ Great book for fathers, too
+ AMAZING

This book helped me survive my first-born. It was such a breath of fresh air, and Lamott was like my best friend, sharing the same experiences. I have read this book countless times - and laugh out loud each time. I always send this book to all my friends when they have their first born. (As you ...

Daughter of the Saints: Growing Up In Polygamy17 reviews
Dorothy Allred Solomon

W. W. Norton & Company, 2004

What a learning experience!

+ A great read
+ The inside story on polygamy

This was a book I could not put down. I really enjoyed learning about growing up in a polygamist family - from a "middle child" point of view. I learned so much about how lonely the wives were and how they struggled to raise their children.

Prep: A Novel481 reviews
Curtis Sittenfeld

Random House, 2005

One of the best books I've read in years

+ At first, an engaging read in the recollections of Midwestern, middle class, plain Lee Fiora; then, it is verbose and graphic

Curtis Sittenfeld has proven herself as a master of characterization. She has managed to get inside the head of her main character in a very real way, revealing the kinds of thoughts that most of us have had, but would never admit to. This book took me right back to being a teenager.

Incredibly atmospheric but was just missing something to make it great

+ 3.5 But I'm Rounding Up, A Dark and Sadly Moving Tale
+ Was this really written in the twentieth century???

When I finally learned how to read at the late ago of seven I stopped seeing words as a series of letters and started seeing pictures instead. Not just the picture one word projected or one sentence, but the whole book. I started reading books as though they were movies and so learned to read ...

Just what I needed to read as a juggling mom-professional-wife ...

I read this book a couple of years ago, and I laughed A LOT because I related to much to it. I recommended it to one of my best friends, who is exactly like the protagonist. Bottom line, I'm only going to say that it was an entertaining read that felt like "hey, I'm not the only one!" and I ...

Straight Up and Dirty: A Memoir115 reviews
Stephanie Klein

William Morrow, 2006

someone who actually got it

+ Very enjoyable...

I feel a little miffed at all the Stephanie hate going on in these reviews. Of course it's self-absorbed, it's a memoir! Who is she supposed to write about? I read this during my own divorce and there were times when I wanted to smack all my friends in the face and lock myself in my room and read ...

The Uses of Enchantment: A Novel26 reviews
Heidi Julavits

Doubleday, 2006

Beautiful, smart, perfect

+ Truth is a slippery fish.

This novel was one of my favorite books of 2007. It's nearly perfect in its execution. It's tight, well-conceived, and deeply human. If you love to think and love narrators who think, I can't recommend it highly enough.
