A Wonderful Retelling of Beauty and The Beast!!!

+ Not her best, but still good

I purchased this book with some hesitation based on the mixed reviews I had read. This was an excellent story!! I enjoyed this book so much, it took me less than a day to read it, and I can't wait to read it again! (so I'm not:) What a wonderfull retelling of an old classic.

A Gorgeous Collection of Stories

+ seems light, but is haunting
+ Really Enjoyed The Twist On The Old...

This book is a gorgeous collection of stories, each at once familiar and strange.  From the slick prose and grungy setting of Shetterly's "Little Red and the Big Bad" to the opulence of Snyder's "Golden Fur," to Hoffman's haunting "Chambers of the Heart," these reinvented fairy tales are crafted to ...

A Lovely Book

+ Great

I know this book is ment for children, but I was 'tweenage' when I first read this book. It's a lovely book. I don't think it should upset so many people that is has one paragraph about the baby, who has the mind of an adult, not liking breastfeeding. Really, would YOU like to breastfeed when ...

Still great

+ Good

While this has been my least favorite of the Maguire books that I've read (although, admittedly I have not read Lost, which I've understood to be not quite Maguire caliber) I am still awarding it 5 stars because it was still one of the most amazing reads! I have said this is in other Maguire ...

Maguire has done it again

+ It Fits
+ Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister

His wonderful novels have yet to disappoint. He is so descriptive and clear, I find myself drawn into his worlds completely. I have read 4 or 5 of his novels now and every time I have thoroughly enjoyed his twisted take on a familiar back story. Keep 'em coming!

A charming retelling

+ Very nice retelling.
+ Good, but with some notable errors

The Nightingale is an entry in the Fairy Tale series including such notables as Briar Rose (Jane Yolen) and Snow White and Rose Red (Patricia C. Wrede). Dalkey retells the familiar story of the nightingale-- in a setting of feudal Japan rather than the original China. Dalkey is clearly fond ...

Patricia A. McKillip

Ace Trade, 2002

Excellent writing, world, and premise

+ A Tale of Love, Family, and Faerie
+ Dark and Dreamlike

Winter Rose is typical of Patricia A. McKillip's recent work. It is extremely well written and evokes not only the images of her created worlds, but the textures and scents as well. While, on the surface, this feels like one of a number of similar stories wherein a young girl faces adversity and ...

Alright but...

I enjoyed this novel, I love retellings of fairytales and though I'm not all the big on the immortality idea the plot was fun and generally quite enjoyable. However, Napoli did not take the book and end it in the direction I might have hoped. The mermaids in the story are cursed to live as mortals ...
