Warner Brothers
Witty, entertaining propaganda - good package
+ Fun World War 2 Espionage drama + Enjoyable WWII espionage
As a follow up to "The Maltese Falcon" with John Huston directing and Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor paired again, "Across the Pacific" promised to be an entertaining film and so it is. The film is an unbelievable thriller in which Bogart infiltrates a group of Japanese sympathisers plotting to ...

Extraordinary Focus on Ordinary Men and Women of WWII
+ Good purchase + Great deal for World War 2 buffs!
I use the term ordinary to emphasize just how extraordinary the US infantryman was in WWII. In motion pictures it seems that most war films focus and glorify trained teams sent on secret missions or small groups of elite fighting men trained for a specific purpose. Most of these films never really ...

Guadal Canal Diary
+ OLD MOVIE + I hate amphibious landings
The is a great movie for a WWII buff. I saw it first in our local movie theater back in the 1950s and really enjoyed it. It is, of course, somethng of a propoganda piece but still a great movie to watch. I highly recommend it.
DVD quality was fine.

As good as Hitchcock
+ Great!!
COTTAGE TO LET takes place in Britain during the early days of WWII, when rationing was a problem people grumbled at, when Cockney twerps were bused out to the country and put up wherever there was an extra bed. George Cole, who has one of those faces only a mother could love, is the leading ...

In Which We Serve
+ Island Race + Stiff Upper Lip British War Film
With Britain in the pit of the Second War, playwright Coward was desperate to do a morale-boosting film, and "Serve" was the inspired result. The normally effete Coward is appropriately "stiff upper lip" as Kinross, and a young Mills stands out in a first rate ensemble cast which also includes ...

Joan Crawford: I want to be recognized. When I hear people say, 'There's Joan Crawford!' I turn around and say, Hi! How are you

This is one of my favorite pictures from the end of Joan's MGM career. Joan plays Michele de la Becque. A woman living in France who tries to help a downed U.S. flyer. Joan looked so beautiful and timeless in this picture. I also recommend watching Above Suspicion (1943). This is another war-era ...

THE BATTLE OF WORLDVIEWS!!
+ Powell & Pressburgerlicious + 49th Parallel
First of all, this Criterion-restored version is a great quality picture, clean and crisp. Second, it is a movie with an ulterior motive, that of getting the then-neutral USA into the war. While I don't think it detracts from the entertainment merits, some people do. The story begins with a German ...
