How to Make an American Quilt [VHS]53 reviews
Winona Ryder, Ellen Burstyn

Universal Studios, 1998

Still a Favorite!
I fell in love with this movie years ago as a young college student. Now married ten years, with children it is still relatable and beautiful. I love everything about this movie. I cannot wait to watch it with my daughter when she is old enough. Chick flick, yes! And that's a good thing.

Providence2 reviews
John Gielgud, Dirk Bogarde

One of the Best Films of the Seventies
Many filmmakers and critics consider this to be the best film of its time. Not only are the performances brilliant, but a great deal can be learned about the language and mechanics of cinema by watching this movie very carefully. You will learn something new every time. Now if only they would make a good DVD!

Flash
This is a great movie for any age. Lucas Black is a great actor at even such a young age.

Resurrection [VHS]81 reviews
Ellen Burstyn, Sam Shepard

Universal Studios, 1998

Resurrection - No Problems With DVD
The movie is great - even all these years later. I watched it on my Sony DVD player, which is at least 5 years old. I was a little concerned that there might be a viewing problem because of the DVD format, but there was no problem with the picture or sound. The movie plays as widescreen, which is what I prefer. There are no special features, but this movie is so good that you don't need them.

Timepiece (1996) [VHS]5 reviews
Naomi Watts, Kevin Kilner

Hallmark, 2002

Worthy prequel
"Christmas Box" is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I've been itching for the beautiful prequel "Timepiece" to come out. Told in the frame of reminiscence, this is the backstory of the dignified Mary Parkin of the other movie, and of her husband and daughter. Kevin Kilner is astonishingly good as David Parkin, the owner of a successful company during WW2. David is a bachelor with odd ...

Goodbye Charlie [VHS]17 reviews
Tony Curtis, Debbie Reynolds

Fox Home Entertainme, 2003

I hope it comes out on DVD
This has remained one of my favorite movies throughout the years. I think Debbie Reynold's delivery of her lines drags occasionally when she is acting bewildered by what she is experiencing, but the plot is so cute and Tony Curtis shines so that it makes a wonderful romantic comedy. It is definitely worth viewing if you haven't already seen it...and I hope it comes out on DVD so that I can add ...

Silence of the North [VHS]11 reviews
Ellen Burstyn, Tom Skerritt

Gaiam, Inc., 2000

Silence of the North: F.Y.I.
One of the reviewers is correct in that "John Heard" is NOT in Silence of the North, but incorrect on the name "John Pinsent". The actors name is "Gordon Pinsent" who plays "John Frederickson", who rescues Walter and Olive (changed her name from "Alta") Reamer and their baby daughter from certain death in the frozen wilderness, and, who Olive eventually marries after Walter drownes while heading ...

Same Time Next Year [VHS]117 reviews
Alan Alda, Ellen Burstyn

Universal Studios, 1993

Title says it all
This is a great story about a couple married to other people who meet by accident, fall in love and continue an affair for almost 25 years by meeting one time each year for a weekend before going back to their families. Nothing sleazy which is why it's so compelling, but fun to watch as they grow and change over the years. Recommended for anyone who ever fell in love and knew it wouldn't work, ...

Oscar's Greatest Moments - 1971 to 1991 [VHS]6 reviews
Karl Malden, Aaliyah

Sony Pictures, 1992

OSCAR'S GREATEST MOMENTS
From Liza Minnelli's show-stopping production number, "Oscar", to Charlie Chaplin's emotional thank you for his 1971 Honorary Oscar, "Oscar's Greatest Moments" is indeed a compilation of some of 1970-1990's Oscar shows' greatest moments. The show, affectionately and candidly hosted by former Academy president Karl Malden, looks at everything: Best Pictures, Best Actors, Best Actresses...and we ...

Follow the River [VHS]16 reviews
Sheryl Lee, Ellen Burstyn

Hallmark, 1996

An American Hero
If this movie generates any interest you should read the book. The story (based on fact) is one of the very best historical novels I've ever been exposed to ... a real life depiction of the frontier and the challenges and experiences of an incredibly courageous and tenacious and determined woman. This is very very special!

Dear America - Letters Home from Vietnam [VHS]79 reviews
Tom Berenger, Ellen Burstyn

Hbo Home Video, 1995

Emotional, Thought Provoking
I purchased this as a part of a lesson plan on the Vietnam unit. The letters are read by celebrities and they portray the emotions of fear, anger, loneliness and terror. It's one thing to read about Vietnam, but to hear the actual letters and view video from real footage makes it more personal. I would recommend this to any history buff, teacher or the individual who just wants to ...

Twice in a Lifetime [VHS]8 reviews
Gene Hackman, Ann-Margret

Anchor Bay, 1989

Hackman's Great
Gene Hackman is not handsome or suave. He isn't a tough guy in the mold of Bogart or Cagney though he has a manly presence. He doesn't have a romantic persona on screen, but somehow he carries off a believable middle-age romance with Ann Margret in Twice in a Lifetime. Well, who wouldn't if the object of affection was Ann-Margret? When a man leaves his family after fifty, dumps his wife, ...

Hanna's War [VHS]7 reviews
Ellen Burstyn, Maruschka Detmers

Anchor Bay, 1997

A Great and Relevant Film About the Heroes of the Holocaust
I just saw this film last night and I was overwhelmed. Hanna was an extremely strong and brave woman. Her story and the story of her fellow paratroopers will touch your heart. It really shows how dedicated the early Jewish settlers of Palestine really where. I will definitely watch this one again and again.

Last Picture Show [VHS]99 reviews
Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges

Sony Pictures, 1994

One of the greatest American films
Having seen this in the early 70s, I recently found out that my wife had never seen it. Seeing it again was an incredible experience. It is, without a doubt, one of the finest films ever done in America. Script, Cast, Location, film technique, editing, and also the great soundtrack, it's as perfect as it can be. It's stronger now (for me at least) than I remember it being for me in 71. It seems ...

King of Marvin Gardens [VHS]14 reviews
Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern

Sony Pictures, 1994

King of Marvin Gardens
This movie is a cult classic. Ellen Burstyn, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern and Julia Robinson star in this 1970's movie about two very different brothers and their relationship as well as their broken dreams and schemes. Ellen Burstyn said this is one of her favorite movies. Julia Robinson is stunningly beautiful.

TRAGEDY aka "Surviving" aka "Surviving: A Family in Crisis"2 reviews
Molly Ringwald, River Phoenix

Sunburst Enterprises

Powerful, needs to be issued on DVD
For some reason, the video issuers retitled this movie. It was called "Surviving" when it aired on ABC-TV. And the description is wrong--the teen male is played by Zach Galligan , not River Phoenix (he plays Molly Ringwald's younger brother and he was NOT 15 years old). I don't know why this isn't on DVD, especially with its top notch cast! Ellen Burstyn, Marsha Mason, Paul Sorvino--they all ...
