20,000 Leagues Under the Sea [VHS]103 reviews
Kirk Douglas, James Mason

Walt Disney Video, 1997

Impressive presentation.
Unable to obtain a 2-disc version in Region 4 format, in Australia, I bought this one through AMAZON. It is a great piece of work. The "making of" is a real eye-opener for me. Great extracts from film history. Wonderful entertainment!

A Star Is Born--Restored Version [VHS]98 reviews
Judy Garland, James Mason

Warner Home Video, 1992

Simply the Best Performance Ever
I had the good fortune to have seen this movie in its original, uncut, length on Christmas Day 1954 at the Pantages Theater in LA. The production number "Born in a Trunk" was the last scene prior to intermission. When Judy finished the number, the entire movie audience rose to thier feet and gave that filmed performance a 5 minute standing ovation. To this day, I have never witnessed anything ...

Last of Sheila [VHS]55 reviews
Richard Benjamin, Dyan Cannon

Warner Home Video, 1995

Intriguing Mystery
This was a mystery within a mystery.....one of my all time favorite movies. No spoon-feeding to the audience and yet the plot hung together well with no discernable holes.

Boys From Brazil [VHS]65 reviews
Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier

Live / Artisan, 1999

Chilling Thriller
An all star cast, headed up by Gregory Peck and Lawrence Olivier, makes this a great thriller about the cloning of Hitler. As others noted at the time this movie was made cloning was off in the future but as science makes science fiction reality, it makes the movie more powerful in having a basis for "What If?" The DVD itself was okay in terms of picture quality and played well on my DVD ...

Unknown Chaplin: Great Director (Dir) [VHS]18 reviews
James Mason, Albert Austin

Hbo Home Video, 1998

DESERVES ITS STATUS
Considered a masterpiece in its genre, THE DIRTY DOZEN delivers on all counts. The entire cast does a first-rate job in this exciting film. You won't be checking your watch with this one, as the 2 1/2 hour running time moves quickly. If you're after classics or action films, this is a must for your library.

Julius Caesar (1953) [VHS]62 reviews
Marlon Brando, James Mason

Julius Caesar (Mason,Gilgud, Brando etc)

North By Northwest [VHS]371 reviews
Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint

MGM, 1996

Great Quality
I bought the Blu-ray version of North by Northwest for my Dad for Christmas. We love the movie in its original form, however we were both completely blown away by the quality! The clarity and colors were amazing. The documentaries that are also included on the disk are also very interesting. Definitely a good buy!

Ivanhoe (1982) [VHS]43 reviews
James Mason, Anthony Andrews

Sony Pictures, 1994

The ONLY true adaptation (so far)
I have not seen the 1952 version, but I have seen this version and the A&E miniseries. I have also read the book a number of times (it is one of my favorites). Although the A&E version is longer and includes scenes and characters that this version leaves out (such as Urfried, Gurth, the opening meal), the A&E version distorts the story (adding absurd subplots) and drastically changes the ...

The Verdict [VHS]92 reviews
Paul Newman, Charlotte Rampling

20th Century Fox, 1997

A striking performance by Newman with an all-star cast
"The Verdict" is one of the all-time great courtroom films. The basic storyline involves Paul Newman as a broken-down ambulance-chasing plaintiff's attorney who nonetheless has gotten hold of an excellent medical malpractice case. The Newman character had a streak of very bad luck earlier in his career, and is now an alcoholic wreck, neglecting his law practice as he descends into failure. ...

Mayerling (1968) [VHS]8 reviews
Omar Sharif, Catherine Deneuve

MGM (Warner), 1998

Not Perfect, But Vastly Entertaining
I have been told that the French predecessor of this film is better, but I don't see how. The compelling true story of the downfall of the Hapsburg family is recounted here with an emphasis on the personal tragedy of Prince Rudolph. Here is a man trapped in a loveless marriage, domineered by his tyranical father, deprived of the love of a mother who tries to dazzle everyone, caught in the ...

11 Harrowhouse [VHS]6 reviews
Charles Grodin, Candice Bergen

Fox Home Entertainment, 1986

Definitely worthy of attention
It's a shame to think of how many good movies have been made, only to come to this: no showings on TV, no DVD, and just a few used VHS tapes on the secondary market. Such is the case for 11 Harrowhouse (AKA Anything for Love (USA) (TV title), Fast Fortune). 1974 May have come and gone, but this movie still makes for engaging entertainment. Fully 4 tons of diamonds are stolen from the leading ...

Jesus of Nazareth (3pc) [VHS]388 reviews
Robert Powell, Olivia Hussey

Live / Artisan, 1995

A Note About Editions
Whole books have been written about the film versions of the life of Jesus. The enormous number of personal reviews attached to the Zeffirelli DVDs in the Amazon website, covering all manner of topics, attests to what can be said. The purpose of my review is to clarify some points about timings, and to urge that some sort of deluxe edition should be marketed in America. First, let me address ...

Mandingo [VHS]74 reviews
James Mason, Susan George

Paramount, 1998

Harsh Realities, Warped Logic, Sexual Subjugation & Chicainery In The 1830's Deep South!!
This film is still controversial and shocking some 34 yrs after it's first debut in theatres! I remember hearing my parents discuss this film in shocked disbelief after they'd gone to see it back in 1975!---And the first season of SNL did a hilarious sketch parody of it which is still among their more legendary and cutting edge sketches of all time! (-: The subject of slavery itself is ...

Gordy [VHS]19 reviews
Doug Stone, Kristy Young

Walt Disney Video, 1995

Lovable pig inspires compassion for animals
My son who is 6 and my Godson who is 3 absolutely loved this movie. They have watched it over and over. I thought the pig was adorable, especially when he talked and snorted at the same time. What I liked most about this movie was that it inspires people of all walks to examine their eating habits and find compassion for animals that we consider "food".

Caught (1949) [VHS]7 reviews
James Mason, Barbara Bel Geddes

Republic Pictures Home Video, 1994

When the dreamy illusions clash against the bitter reality!
The talented director Max Ophlus (Imitation of life) -whose influence over Rainer Werner Fassbinder, was widely admitted by the extinct German master- dealt with this complex and terrible existential drama with master maturity. Ophlus, like a social surgeon, dissected and embodied the dreamy fantasies of a woman who lives into a brainwashed ambiance according the fashionable patterns of the ...
